Not BB, but I'm a Nikon fan so a little biased.
Buy it. She'll love you big time. They come with the charger and
a battery. Get a spare battery. I'm not sure but you'll need a
memory card too. That will get her started. Sometimes on e-bay
theres pretty good deals on glass when you want a bigger lens.

Update from my original post:

Now I use-

Canon 5DMKII for anything needing a potential paycheck.

Panasonic/Lumix TS3 for hiking, camping, kayaking, snorkling, diving, everything else.

Both are simply amazing cameras.
