    Kayak Surfing

I get an "Error" message and no video when I click "HERE". Can you fix this? Chuck, if the waves are too small to be exciting for the kayak just switch to a pirogue.:)

    24 Hour Kayak

24 hour build = possible, but probably not. Similar advertisement as "build it in a weekend", or a "12 hour canoe". I think the designers main goal was for a simple to build, and inexpensive boat for first time builders. Looks like a win to me.

    24 Hour Kayak

Interesting building method. This would be a very good first time build. Also no epoxy/fiberglass needed. https://ashesstillwaterboats.com/24-hour-kayak/build-sequence/

    Marsh Pirogue (almost)

Thanks for the reminder. It has been 40+ years since I had these kind of seats. Guess I forgot about the wet bottom.

Some thoughts, some what organized. 1. Use 5mm exterior luan for sides. 9mm for the floor. 1/4" BC exterior pine if the luan was not available. 2. Butt splices with plywood backings for the sides. The floor may can be spliced over a rib. Either way no epoxy/fiberglass needed 3. 3M5200...

    Marsh Pirogue (almost)

Made a new seat for this boat. It is lower and some what different than my usual chair. The boat has gone to a new owner so I will have to wait for a report on how it works. I made the base similar to the bench in the kids pirogue. The seat came from Academy Sports and was less than $10...

    Kids Pirogue

Chuck I like your ideas about the seat/bench. I joined two boards together to make the bench wide enough using an idea from a video Joey mentioned to me. This is how I did it. It worked fine but a word of caution. Do not try to saw into the lumber you could ruin a blade. Drove galvanized...

    Kids Pirogue

A solution for the bottom issues has been decided. The boat has been passed to a new owner. He will be finishing the bottom with epoxy and 6 oz. fiberglass inside and out. Using thicker plywood for the bottom would have been the best way for the boat to remain kid safe and buildable. The...

More hindsight. 3/4" fasteners are too long for a 5/8" chine log with 5mm plywood. No room to set the fastener below the surface of the plywood. The nails or screw points will come through. Use shorter fasteners or at least a 3/4" log. Hillman makes a 5/8" exterior screw that would work...

    Kids Pirogue

I'm still trying to decide which solution to use for the bottom.s issues, but I did weigh the boat today. It weighed 26.1 lbs.

I understand your point about putting the fiberglass on the inside . It would offer more resistance for stresses coming from below. Fiberglass would have been the proper method for building with this thin of plywood. It is basically a skin on frame boat. The 5mm luan is the skin. Adding...

    Marsh Pirogue (almost)

My son and I finally were able to make a fishing trip. He used the marsh pirogue and I took my "Bayoy Dorcheat" pirogue. The fishing was not spectacular but we enjoyed the trip and learned some things about the new boat. Our standard 8" tall chair is too high. The boat was too tipsy sitting...

I had not considered running the braces down the center. That would be structurally similar to using the keel strips. The 5mm luan is not very stiff and I don't think it offers much puncture resistance. Right now my two best choices seem to be either continue to experiment and try "poor...

Building a square stern pirogue strip, stitch and glue

The trim cap worked well covering the ply edge. Very neat look.

    Assists for aging fishermen

Very innovative. I like that you can take it down so as not to interfere wile fishing. Probably would be hard to do using PVC but to avoid the hassle of taking it down and storing it to fish it might could be hinged at the gunnels. It could then be folded forward and laid flat along side the...

    Kids Pirogue

The boat does need some finishing work to elevate it above the "raw" condition it is in. That will have to wait until some more construction work can make it into a more practical boat. The 5mm floor is too thin and flexible to be serviceable. Normally the solution would to cover it with...

    Kids Pirogue

Clamped the plywood for the floor in position and traced around the chine logs. Cut out the bottom with 1/4" overhang and then glued it in place. The router with trim bit was used to cut the excess over hang. Finished fitting the bottom flush with a hand plane and belt sander, also rounded...
