Ain't sure the boss will let me bring pig's feet into the kitchen. This may have to wait 'till she is out of town. So this is like a soup - ? George

    Windmill

That's a good question. Maybe the old, multiple blade windmills were more visible? Perhaps noisier than the new ones? Smaller than the commercial rigs we put up now? As to cars, planes, feral cats, windows and such, yes, that seems to be a valid point, and it is also exactly what the wind...

    Windmill

A google search of "bird deaths wind power" produces links to articles speaking to both sides of the issue. Wind farm location seems to make a difference. So does newer technology (bigger slower props, less of them) vs. older technology (smaller, higher RPM, more turbines in a given...

    Windmill

No, I'm not sure of the facts. Nor are they mine. Just telling you what I read in an article in USA Today. Could be they just made it all up. Could be a liberal media conspiracy to undermine the wind power industry. George

    Windmill

As a matter of fact there is an article in USA Today (today's issue, page 3A) "Bird Deaths soar at wind farms". Altamont Pass, in the San Joaquin Valley in California, has 5400 windmills producing electricity. Around 10,000 birds per year are getting killed, including eagles and hawks, and...

    Windmill

Seems like I read somewhere that the big blade at a slower RPM is safer for the birds - ? Apparently the big power generating mills kill a lot of birds. Used to see smaller props turning faster, but the newer ones seem to all be what ya'll are describing - huge twin blade prop, turning slow...

Pier and Shore Fishings - Jacksonville

Looks like I will be spending a couple of work weeks in Jacksonville, FL soon (early October). I won't be able to have a boat with me, so I'm thinking about just fishing off a county pier or such in the evenings. Anyone know the area? Where should I fish? What could I fish for? Don't know...

    New build - first build

I think Chuck makes sense on this - if there is going to be an opening at all, make it big enough to let in fresh air and dry out the space when not in use. And if you are doing that, you need a secure hatch so that the space won't flood in an accident. (My boat doesn't have any enclosed space...

    weekend Dutch oven cooking

I don't believe for a minute that Canadians pour things sideways. Has to be that the picture was rotated. The only place you can pour things sideways is on the equator. Of course if you were in Australia you would be able to pour things UP. Get your facts straight, Sparky. GBinGA

How long does it take a boat to rot?

Good point. I suspect that almost all mass production work is done with polyester. The material cost and the curing time would almost require it. And poly, as Matt points out, ain't the same as epoxy. GBinGA

    wood cutting tool of choice

High quality jig saw, and try blades till you find the right one. Make sure you understand the oscillating feature, and switch it off for 1/4" ply. Matt's post on the zero clearance plate was perfect. My jig saw is a Bosch. Expensive, but Lord, it does work. George

Encapsulate them so that they don't rot. Consider using some thinner, so that you get good penetration. GBinGA

How long does it take a boat to rot?

I liked Jack's reply. Just my opinion; I worry about a pinhole in the glass / epoxy letting tiny bits of water into the wood core where it will take forever to dry out and thus lead to rot. Has more to do with theory than experience, though. I've heard of this happening in...
