I put on what I hope to be the last coat of epoxy on the outside tonight. I hope to start on the fillets soon although I'm not really looking forward to it.
Chuck,
I'm using the same luan. Do you saturate the inside and outside or just one side? I did the outside but wasn't sure if I needed to do the inside as well. On the bottom, one half was from a darker sheet and man did it soak up the epoxy. You could barely tell I had applied anything at...
One thing I was wondering is how in the world does anyone use fast curing epoxy. I got the slow cure and I apply it as quickly as I can and by the time I get through about 3/4 of the smallest batch I can make with the pumps (2:1 ratio) it's already getting thick enough that it doesn't brush...
I put on a second coat and it's going to need another one. How many coats does everyone usually put on? Oh and to who ever said to get a carbide scrapper to knock off the high epoxy spots and runs is a genius. It works awesome.
Learned another lesson last night. Not a good idea to run your...
:D I did it! I got the fiber glass on. It was nearly as bad as I was expecting but it did take me a lot longer than I thought it would. It actually looks way better in person than it does in the pictures. It is still wet when I took the pictures.
Some things I learned as an amateur...
I...
I rough cut the fabric tonight and I'm going to let it rest on there and lay down as much as possible. I'm going to try and apply the epoxy either tomorrow night or Wednesday. I didn't really know how to do the ends so I just cut them to shape up to the stems and I'll apply another piece cover...
Beautiful work! Something I just thought of. What kind of radius should I be aiming for? Are the fillets just enough to put a little rounding in the corners or do I want it to be the largest radius I can get? I'm building an UJ pirogue.
I mixed up my first epoxy and wood flour ever to fill screw holes, etc the other night. I can say that it's definitely not the easiest thing I've ever worked with. It was hard to smooth and dried very rough which required quite a bit of sanding. I had a little extra so I tried a test fillet...
I flipped mine yesterday and while there is no significant bowing, there is a little waviness. I'm not sure that I can really get rid of it. I doubt it will be noticeable but I still don't like it.
Bottom is rough cut and I'm almost ready to glue it. Will either a flush trim or round over bit work well to get a closer cut? I'm probably going to try it but have to test it on the luan to see how it takes a router.
One thing you can't tell from the pictures is that the screws on the outside are very slight counter sunk so I'll be able to cover it.
I also wussed out and put 2 screws into each of the other rub rail scarfs from the inside of the boat.
Well, it looks like the repair took. Before removing the clamps I put 2 screws into the scarf from the outside. Then removed the clamps and put 2 screws in from the inside of the boat. If this ever happens to anyone else the key to getting the proper contact of the scarf use another board...
