Will adding inwales increase or decrease the pressure on the outwales?

George, Unfortunately, I wasn't really able to get any of the old glue out because there just wasn't enough space to get in there. I could barely get new glue in the space. Regarding the scarfs and tension...I know exactly what you're saying but as a first time builder that was something that...

    1st Timer Build Log

I used epoxy to reglue it. We'll see what happens. I've got some screws to put in as well once the epoxy has setup.

I used Gorilla glue for the scarfs and don't think I clamped it too tight but maybe I did. The wood is 3/4" as specified in the plans.

I'm planning on adding some inwales but haven't yet.

Actually, the one that broke is about 1/2 way between the center and the end.

    1st Timer Build Log

I have a bad problem. One of the scarf joints on a rub rail came apart. The rub rail is glued to the sides so I can't really take it off and fix it. Luckily it did not break the side when it came apart. I used a couple of c-clamps to see if it would at least go back together and it's under a...

    1st Timer Build Log

I haven't measured it but the sides were just a tad under 16'. I'll measure it tonight and let you know. I think the bottom is just a tad under 28" wide. What color are you painting the inside? I can't decide. I was actually going to leave the inside natural and paint the outside dark green...

I'm more of a natural finish kind of guy. I'll paint the inside because it's the ugly side of the plywood but everything else will be just epoxy and clear finish.

Took the clamps off of the second rub rail last night. In this picture you can see the small gap between the rub rails and the stem that I will have to fill when I do the fillets. Also, that's the reason I added a screw to each end.

I planned and did use a screw through the rub rails into the stems for gluing but I was hoping to take it out after the glue dried. :(

    1st Timer Build Log

I glued on the second rub rail tonight. Anybody else nervous that the rub rails are going to spring the boat apart? When I make the next one, I will definitely go thinner than 3/4" on the rub rails. I'm a little disappointed about one thing. I didn't get good adhesion between the rub rails...

You can NEVER have enough clamps...That's the first rule of woodworking, isn't it? I actually bought some more tonight. HD has some pretty descent spring clamps for .99.

Oh crap...If the rub rails are more a pita than the ribs then I'm not looking forward to them. I spent an hour tonight just trying to bevel and line up the ribs tonight. I'm using 4 instead of 3.

Gluing the sides to the stems. It was a real joy doing this by myself. I left the stems a little proud to sand down flush later.

    New member....questions?

Amateur comment here...I thought that the fillets were not so much for strength but to put a curve in place for the fiber glass. When you use inside chines wouldn't you have corners and I read over and over again that fiber glass doesn't really like corners too much. Can someone shed some...

    Resin application thickness question

Not glassing like you are probably thinking. I went with a fiber glassed butt joint instead of the scarf joint. That's what I'm working on. I finished the bottom piece tonight so I should start putting this thing together this week. I figured you were probably about finished by now!

Thanks Jimmy! That's exactly what I needed. Glad to know I'm doing it right!
