A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

Marley is recovering very well from her splenectomy. Keeping her from doing too much is the chore at this point. She is feeling well enough that we can all enjoy each other's company. As long as no other conditions hit her we are golden. Fingers crossed that nothing has metastasized or at...

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

I am really realizing just how much I appreciate having my dog here by my side. She wants to be at my with me all the time and it is such a comfort in what have been difficult times. As I mentioned elsewhere she just had her spleen removed and may be on borrowed time now. One of he reason for...

I always allowed it. Never had a problem. They say it is a bad idea.

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

I have suspended work on the pirogue for today and maybe a few days. My dog Marley laid down yesterday during her morning walk and refused to get up. I knew something serious was wrong so I got the car while my wife stayed with her. It turns out she had a tumor on her spleen that ruptured and...

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

The frames are glued and ring nailed in. I have to decide how to do the bottom. I can splice the plywood so the joints hit the frames or ignore the frames. I can use a piece on each end or a single piece. I think I can make the best use of the ply by using two small triangles one on each end...

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

I knew that but hadn't really considered it. Hopefully it will be enough of a factor to make the difference. Her motivation to paddle the pirogue may be the deciding factor and I can't usually figure that. She enjoys getting out on the water, but whether she will take to the pirogue is...

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

Yep. I am pretty sure that I will like the UJ seat I built as is, but I hoping that I can find a happy medium where my wife can get in and out and still not be too tippy. I am anxious to see how tippy/stable the pirogue will be. I can only speculate at this point based on my experience with...

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

Yeah I wasn't suggesting that I would go that high, just that somewhere between that and the UJ seat plans might be about right for her. My hope was that she'd be okay with something like maybe 7-1/2". I think that is probably about what the seat cushion would be. It looks like about 30.5"...

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

I have the sides glued and nailed to the stems with bronze ring nails on my UJ pirogue. The center frame is temporarily clamped in place, but not yet glued or fastened with any fasteners. Would you make an effort to keep the frames vertical or would you just make them 90 degrees to the...

    Paint

I was tempted to go with latex house paint, but finally decided on Hunters Specialties Paint in olive drab. I got a quart can for $18.49 with free shipping and should have it by the 24th. I figure it should be enough to paint the boat and a paddle or two. I figure that I might paint a single...

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

I built one boat that I fussed over and meant to be pretty. The rest were tools and function pretty much trumped everything else. To be honest I enjoyed the tools more, not that I minded all the complements I got on the pretty wood and varnish of the one that felt I had to baby. It was fun...

Yeah, having done it both ways I am wondering why I am subjecting myself to this :)

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

I realized that while the scarfs in my pirogue sides looked okay the pieces were not aligned right. I spent a good bit of time checking them when epoxying and clamping. Not sure what happened. I debated over whether the amount or error was something I could live with but ultimately I cut them...

    Paint

Thanks. It looks like both of the duck boat paints that Bass Pro sells got mostly good reviews. I am leaning that direction and may go with the cheaper of the two, but color selection might be a factor.

    Paint

Bass Pro has a store a couple miles from my house and they list: Hunter's Specialties® H.S. Camo® Permanent Camo Paint adds a non-reflecting, weather-resistant finish to duck blinds, boats, outboard motors, and treestands. 32 oz. quart can for $24.99 in olive drab or marsh grass Parker Coatings...

    Paint

Okay more dumb questions... Obviously lots of choices are possible and the best one is based on a lot of factors. Boats I have built have had different requirements and a few different finishes. I am thinking about what I might do on my pirogue. My first though was a natural wood finish with...

I doubt that I can make them hit the rear rib. I'll have to check. I also considered that moving them as far to one end or the other as possible also makes for more usable leftover pieces., not that that should be a huge factor.

The side scarfs are curing so I will be assembling before too long. I will be cutting the sides to length and wonder about where to place the scarfs. Should I avoid placing them in the center at the frame or place them right at the center frame? Since the uncut sides are almost 16' and the...

I hadn't either. I bought it for heavy duty work with slabs, but found I liked it for almost everything. A lot of pro house framers use them. They are big heavy beasts. The blade is typically on the opposite side which I find is easier to sight along. I really prefer it for most usage.

A new pirogue project in Tallahassee

Well I got a break in the rain and moved the sheets to the other side of the shop. I made the cuts with the guide and a worm gear circular saw. I have to say that given the way my shop is set up it was a safer more pleasant process. The cuts are straight accurate and clean. My shop really...
