    NorthWind Finally.....

You burn that boat on purpose and I'll make that drive to smack you in the brain! And I think I might have to stand in line to get my turn.

    Determining rocker

What's her length and width (talking about the boat  ) ?

    NorthWind Finally.....

Darrel, I'm just shocked and ashamed to have provided such a substandard product. Let me now when you're done building it and I'll be there to take it off your property so you don't have to look at it any more.

    Determining rocker

If it's going to a combination of both, I'd say keep the rocker closer to 1" or 1.5" on each end. If you paddle a lot in waters with tight twists and turns, then maybe 1.75" on the front. Those would be my personal preferences. Flat bottom boats for paddling tend not to want to track straight...

    substitute for ash?

I've heard reports of oak not behaving with epoxy. Walnut and cherry are poular for looks. Mahogany? Are you steam bending?

    Determining rocker

I like drawing up canoes and kayaks and I fit in with the nuts here. But I'm not the designated or exclusive designer here. Chuck welcomes all nutbags. I don't know a whole lot about sailing but have a good friend that is a retired naval architect for the Dutch navy. I'll ask him if...

    Canoe building question

Yea there's a few different "poly" foams out there. Polyethylene can be "welded" if you heat it up. Meaning, you melt some of the surface, stick against some more polyethylene, and it will lightly bond. Great stuff for packaging computers and shock sensitive items. It's spongy. But it is a...

    Canoe building question

Back to the oringinal question: Hey you could get really silly: They make braided carbon fiber and s-glass sleeves (like a sock). Great for push poles and paddles. You could make the hull from 1" wide foam strips, then sleeve each strip in carbon fiber. Then the type of foam wouldn't matter...

    Canoe building question

Kevlar will "fuzz" if you have to sand it for a repair. It's a pain. I've seen some shops use a razor blade to cut a "squared edge" to avoid fuzzing. Heard some use sand blasting. But I thought the "standard" method for using it in hull lay up was sandwiching between e-glass or...

    Canoe building question

Ron - "Building Your Own Kevlar Canoe" is a good read. Doing a fiberglass production is using a "female" mold. The one in the book, you're building from a "male" mold from foam, coating it with wax, and then popping a hull of it. So the time of building a male foam mold and popping a hull off of...

    Canoe building question

It seems like you'd get a lighter boat building a foam plug mold and then popping off a fiberglass hull with selected foam-fiberglass stiffeners... like in the book.

    Canoe building question

Ron, The biggest concern I'd have for this type boat is the sheer strength of the foam. Another boat website, which shall remain nameless because I'll hear the "click-click" of Chuck's double barrel shotgun if I do mention it, built a simple canoe out of 1/2 foam and biax cloth. They said it...

    Canoe building question

puncture resistence is the biggest reason. In buildng with foam core, you have to apply fiberglass on each side of the foam core to create a composite sandwich. By the time you build up enough skin thickness on the outer part of the hull to be puncture resistent, the skin is strong enough on...

    Guys night rum shrimp

That does sound good. I steam them in a double boiler/steamer until pink. Peel them and sprinkle with a little Old Bay. I'll have to give this a way a try. How many swigs of rum per batch do you take?

    Who Said It............Sad but True.

No not "trying" anything. Re-read what I stated: for some it was "Anybody But Bush". And by Bush I meant republican/McCain. They wanted to vote for the guy the least like Bush. That I could have been more clear on that. I'm not saying that's right or wrong. Just they way people approach there...
