A while back, I notice Home Despot had aluminum flashing, 14" x 20 ft for $10. Stronger than vinyl, and possibly stiff enough with gunwales and inwales to use only a minimal frame.

Forgot to add this: there is an Instructable about a PVC & polytarp kayak. It's definitely a "I wonder if I could do this?" rather than something I've let my kid in :-)
