    Be prepared (stoves)

I built several tin can rocket stoves and alcohol soda can stoves as demos for my scouts. I have enough firewood to last for 3 years. That's not including all the propane and white gas stoves lying around here.

    Being prepared (water)

I have 4 rivers/creeks that flow from the local mountains year round, within a 5 mile walk (bike ride). Two of them are dammed for use as the water supply for Vancouver. Use a filter to get out most of the contaminants and bleach for purification. Let the water stand for a day after adding the...

Broken Group Islands - Lots of pics

They didn't have to outrun it, they paddled perpendicular to its path. However, the next time we saw it surface it was 1/4 mile away in the opposite direction. There it decided it would be a fine time to jump out of the water. Spectacular.

    Being prepared (meat)

Re: Being prepared Many people of the poorer nations subsist on a diet primarily of beans and rice. (Legumes and a starch). Add to that dry milk powder. That is what I would use as a basis for an emergency food cache.

Broken Group Islands - Lots of pics

I'm a little late in putting this together. A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I along with 4 other couples spent a week kayaking the Broken Group Islands. They are located on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, at the mouth of Barkley Sound and are part of the Pacific Rim National Park. As...

    NEW WIRE-SAW

If you are taking a boat, therefore have a bit of storage room, I would suggest getting a Silky Sugoi. They're a little pricey at $80, but they come with a scabbard. We use them at work and they are as fast as a chainsaw on wood up to about 4". They would be a bit of a chore to backpack...

    Canaling my roots

I just finished a 5 day kayak trip to the West Coast of Vancouver Island (I'll write up a trip report soon). One of the people on the trip was a dentist who specialized in how the teeth and jaw worked with the other systems of the body, and weren't just a separate island onto themselves. He was...

    NEW WIRE-SAW

As a tree guy, please call a pro. Geezers don't bounce like they used to when they fall. Just a hint, if the guy you call advertises that he will top your tree, then he isn't a pro and should be avoided.

    Red Red Robin

Several people and groups around here have set up live streaming web cams near bald eagle nests. If you do a google search you can find the sites. Don't bother looking right now, it's still too early in the year. Wait a couple of weeks.

    Do I need a pirogue?

Thumbs I have a wooden 13' Laker and two plastic 17' Necky sea kayaks (got them super cheap ex rentals). I have a Grand Vitara and have taken two of the tree boats on it with no problem. I built wooden cross bars for the roof racks, use rachet straps to tie them to the bar and then rope from...

Spring - & Maybe A Blizzard - Just Around Corner

The daffodils are just popping up and then it snows again. This is Vancouver, it's not supposed to snow. mumble mumble mumble

    Dump Cake

The kids are much more enthusiastic about using root beer than I would suspect they would be about using V8 (vegetables - that's what food eats).

    Dump Cake

I'm sure all you Dutch Oven Gordon Ramseys have tried this. We do this one at scouts fairly often. It's a good selling feature to the parents of new kids. Dutch Oven Briquets 1 box cake mix (usually the kind that doesn't require eggs). 1 jar/can apple pie filling 1 can root beer Mix the cake...

    Which wood for which part?

Re: Red Cedar (solid board, no lam) Strong Enough? The heartwood of Western Red Cedar is usually a deep red colour. The heartwood is stiffer than the sapwood. Whether it is strong enough will depend on the diameter you make the shaft, whether the shaft is round or oval, how strong you are...

Table Saw Kickback - Warning Reminder

The saw blade of the dremel doesn't have enough mass, therefore build up enough momentum, that you couldn't hold it back (assuming you have a proper grip). If you have a small piece of material lightly held, I guess it could throw it, but anything more than a pound I doubt would move very much.

I don't know why the link didn't work. It was one of the smiley faces. Thanks for the advice. I read the info and will try a few different things.

    Winter camping in a hammock

I'm looking for some advice from you seasoned hammock campers. This weekend my scout troop went winter camping up the mountain behind Vancouver. (Same place they held the mogul race and snowboard races at the Olympics). My kids were either in snow caves or a snow trench with a tarp roof. We...
