    The Fisheating Creek "Swamp" Trip

Hey Chuck, thanks for the trip report. Sorry Fisheating Creek did not meet expectations, but that's the way it goes: Sometimes you get the bear and sometimes the bear gets you. I have a few claw marks myself from trips that were less than ideal; but it's better to explore new territory than to...

    TRIBE WANTED - FIJI

Turns out that your negative thoughts about the founders of this scheme may be true. Look at this gem (pun intended) of a report: http://www.thejemreport.com/mambo/content/view/265/68/ Apparently these guys are not new to this type of scam. If these allegations are true, I feel sorry for...

    Northern Forest Canoe Trail

Chuck, If you look on the reverse side on the Southernpaddler.com T-shirt, you will notice a moose - symbol of the North Country. Should be no problem hitching up to one of them to pull my canoe across the ice. John

    Northern Forest Canoe Trail

Jack, I have not really given this trip much thought, as yet. I have a busy Winter ahead: Jan. 14th - 8 day dog sled trip in the BWCA Jan. 27th - fly to St. Maarten Island for a 1 week stay Feb. 3rd - Board a wooden three masted clipper ship, with 32 passangers who help crew, and sail for 8...

    Northern Forest Canoe Trail

Set of maps I too am (vaguely) considering a paddle of the 740 mile trail, perhaps late this summer. As you probably know, the NFCT held it’s Second Annual Fund Raising Auction earlier this month. I was the winning bidder for the complete set of 13 maps, along with a first edition of...

    Ocklawaha Nov 5 ,06 , something different.

campsite Another excellent trip report, Chuck, and the pictures are great. Brings back memories since I have camped at that same site on several occasions, as recently as last year with Joe Fennel and company. And IT"S ABOUT TIME MAC DISPOSED OF THAT LEAKY TENT. Not sure whether it was used by...

The St.Mary's River Trip ...Part 4 and web links

muffin tins Sounds like a lot of work to me. Why not just use a tea-lite candle. They only cost about .03 cents if you buy a large bag. Plus, I have used them to heat water inside the tent for tea, oatmeal, grits  , and Ramen. My new Esbit folding stove (measures about 3" X 4") worked fine...

    Felt like I was there

They borught back memories and made me realize how young (62) and good looking I am, compared to you guys :D...

Paddling Canada by John Depa ..Day 14 & 15

pre-plan Thanks for the reply, Sampy I did not register a "pre-plan" because I did not know what the "plan" (route) would be. I am just, "going with the flow" - "playing it by ear." I agree that, on most trips, it is prudent to submit a "trip plan", but in this case I had 15-20 routes...

Paddling Canada by John Depa ..Day 10 & 11

back packer No, Chuck, I did not order the Back Packer. It looks kinda' big and do not know if it is a "portageable" item. Will check it out with you when I get to Florida. Looking forward to taste-testing some of their meals. If they are half as good as you say they are, I will be a steady...

Adventurefoods You have never steered me wrong in the past, Chuck, so I just placed an order with Adventure foods. Mentioned your name in the "comments" section so they will probably charge me double

Paddling Canada by John Depa ...Day 8 & 9

day pack Swampy asked what brand of soap I use. Just a bar that I got from a motel. I keep it in a seperate Zip-Loc bag. Use the same bar for me and my laundry. Weight/volume are real considerations when packing for 30 days. I have never heard of any restrictions on soap use in the BWCA, but I...

Paddling Canada by John Depa ...day #4 & 5

Chuck, I LOVE my hammock, but it would not have served me well on this trip. We are only up to day 5-6. Try cooking a meal (which will come later), during a snow storm, in a hammock! Even if that did not happen, which it did, how does one have evening cocktails and a cigarette in a hammock...

    CAMPING(Gone With The WIND)

Not only should you always stake the tent, you should also tie the canoe for the night. Will relate this in an incident that happened to me while paddling in Quetico last month. Fortunately, for me, it was on off-shore wind and both the tent and the canoe wound up (safely) in the bushes behind...

Chuck & Neil on a Backwards Econ River Trip.

That's why Chuck's Forum is called "southern"paddler: They do everything bass-akwards down there. Last Winter, while paddling a section of the Blackwater River, located in the Florida panhandle, I noticed a young couple who where were paddling their canoe "chuck-style". I (politely) brought it...

    BWCA/Quetico, open invitation

Sorry no one took me up on the Quetico offer. It would have been nice to have someone meet me on the Canadian side. Oh well, I'll just make-do solo. I was asked what route I am taking: It would take far too long to list the many lakes and portages. I counted the portages on the first leg of the...
