Can I use 1/2 ply for a UJ Bottom?

    1. I would not use 1/2 " plywood. 2. If you use 1/4" or less, you need bottom ribs (more) for support. 3. If you use 3/8" plywood, you do not need bottom ribs, if the bottom is not wider than 26". 4. If you ues 1/2" you add weight and cost, you lose your flex, it sits lower in the water. I...

    What lumber to make stem?

I make stems and I make stems. I dont make uj stems. We are not going to the moon, just down the creek. I make them out of a 4 x 4 (3-1/2 x 3-1/2) and I make out of 2 x 4's and 1 x 4's. They all work, the 4 x 4 is cut @33 angle and the 1 x 4 is cut @ 45 angle. you can even wire the ends...

    Hit by the fever

I have to agree with Chuck (a little). The outside is a RUB rail and is structurally for the flimsey sides. The spacers are not essential. I looked at the time that jack wrote or its the grits working on him. Later Keith

    UJ Pirogue update

On seedticks post in trip Report / History Lesson, We cut the top of the side ribs off to install the inside top rail ( no spacers ) but we do add a seat rail that is used as a tie down also. I think you boats look better without the rib stocking through, another option / more work,looking...

Those pirogues have about 600 pounds in them and the draft is about 5 to 6 inches. Thats why we wonder why youll would want 12 inch sides, its extra wood and weight, its not really free boards, its extra boards. Those ars fish holes in the jon boats. you made the compartments to fit your...

    wavy bottom edge

I put my chine on the outside, one piece full length. It will stiffen the sides, and give you a stronger and wider surface to nail (forgive me) and/ or glue. Take with a grain of salt and glass. Later Keith
