Sailboat Re-furb (or) "What did I get myself into?"

At least this will just be digits and not some half stamped cartouch.

Sailboat Re-furb (or) "What did I get myself into?"

I never removed an ID plate, nor can I remember seeing a hull# when I had her all scrubbed and clean. If you call the manufacturers they should be able to give you an approximate year with a discription of the parts, or with some of the part numbers that should be stamped on the hardware. Then...

return for 1st and last build

I start in the middle and work toward the ends and the sides. Then down the sides and let it run off from there. This way the fabric won't want to crawl on ya. And gravity is in your favor. Its a personal preference to roll or to spatula. I spatula. Don't build up too much, you just want to...

Sailboat Re-furb (or) "What did I get myself into?"

Well that's a real beautiful boat, i'll take one like that any day. Wait...you can see it's me, can't you. Don’t forget the idea of running a piece of about 2 or 3 inch glass tape all the way around to reinforce the deck to the sides, or run a fillet of long strand reinforced fiber...

return for 1st and last build

I have done it in colder temps, but i took the epoxy in the house and mixed it after it warmed some. Wife didn't like that. Had to run back inside to mix my next batch. Cold epoxy is thicker to work, and I don’t think the manufacturer recomends it, and it took longer to dry, but I didn't have...

    How bout Uncle John's?

If ya wana get the feel for it, stop at Home Depot or Lowe's and get a sheet of 4'x8' luan for about $10.00. - ( Even if it isn't what you will use to build your pirogue with ) Have them cut it into 4 pieces 11 inches wide by 8 feet long and make sure they did a good straight cut. They will do...

    asymmetrical are swede form

I'm gonna try to not make this too technical. But I build my pirogues symmetrical so if I have to add in any fixed seating you can paddle in either direction, whether solo or tandem, without any change in performance.

return for 1st and last build

Everyone has their own way to skin tha cat, ( not to offend PETA or PITA ). Epoxy dry time depends on what ya got ( fast/med/slow ), temperature,& humidity. Should be dry to the touch, then do the fingernail check ( in a discrete location), see if you can press into it or if it is hard. If set...

That looks great. Your farther along than just some panels. I believe your going to be asked some 'how to' questions before you get finished. Looks like you will be posting on Bragging Board soon.

Stitch & Glue (tie wraps vs. copper wire)

I've used the cheep Harbor Freight 0.020 wire, in 1/32nd holes, placed 3/4 " in from the edge without any real problems. But I got tired of drilling all the holes and twistng wires. So, here is another method to throw into the conversation. I've been using 1/2 " long staples. 1st cut your...

    5 min epoxy

The only time I put any along a seam was in the chine location of a stich and tape pirogue, but only in short rows, spaced between my tie wires. I was in a hurry to pull the wires to tape the seams. It worked great for that but I don’t feel like it had enough time to saturate into the wood. I...

    Is Poplar any good?

I have used popular in pirogues as frames and stems, it is not as strong or dense as oak but is ( in my option ) better than pine. It has a tight straight grain, few to no knots, and it takes the epoxy well. It will rot fast if left unprotected. I brush on thinned epoxy, or rub it on, then...

    Ready to paint

I did that once and had to sand the whole ting back down to the epoxy. Found that the moisture from the waterbase paints soaked into some spots of the wood filler and into the wood just below the gunnal ( where the epoxy had not penatrated so well ) and when it got hot the vapors could not...
