    UJ Pirogue update

Thanks Mick and Chuck, I epoxyied the outer rail on the other side this morning. http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s283 ... -16-07.jpg As you can see, it's all clamped and with 18 inches of fresh snow out there, I'm headed out to snowblow the driveway for an hour then up to the...

    UJ Pirogue update

Tonight I cut the 45 degree ends on the outer rails and did my final dry fitting. I also cut out the section of the ribs to fit the inner rails. I epoxied one side on and thought I had enough clamps (29) to do both sides at once. No way! I needed them all to get a nice even pressure. Oh...

    gettin' there

Lookin good Scooter. Question though - What is that green stuff on the ground? It looks a little familiar, but I just can't seem to recall. My ground is covered with white stuff. Hmmmmm. Maybe I'll ask Jack if he can remember what it is. - VTFogg

    UJ Pirogue update

Hi there Steve, Chuck, and Jack, Steve, I think I'm quite a bit behind you, and I know you have a much more complex project than since you made your own stems. A nice piece of work. Thanks for showing us all. My middle son just removed all the screws from the stem and stern a bit ago...

    UJ Pirogue update

Hello all, Here's an update and a couple of pictures. We dry fitted everything, and last night I epoxied the stem and stern on. http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s283 ... ils002.jpg http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s283 ... ied001.jpg Hopefully I can get the ribs epoxied to the...

    Alternative to Paintbrush?

I've only recently joined with this forum, but that's long enough to know there are some creative, resourceful, and frugal members. When applying epoxy to bond the stem/stern to sides (or similar areas) what do you use to apply the it besides a paint brush? It just seems like a waste to use...

    wavy bottom edge

Uh, oh. I've got this same problem now. In my case it is all between the center and outer ribs, especially close to the center rib where the joint section flares inward. I've only dry fitted the ribs with screws, and the rub rail is just clamped on. Mick, you were right about dry fitting...

    Hairies South Wind (Southern Cross)

Mick, The boys and I just read through all 5 pages of this post. Wow! The boat is beautiful, and your progress is amazing. A great example of what can be done. We're looking forward to seeing more. Great job, and good luck. VTFogg

    Length & Width

My UJ Pirogue is approximately 15' 11" long and the bottom of the widest rib measures 24.5" wide. Uncle John's plans show the wide rib place at the center of the boat when using 3 ribs. Is 24.5" too narrow for this length, thereby adversely affecting stability while increasing speed? I plan...

    Positioning the sides

I temporarily attached one side to the stem and stern with screws tonight. Then set it up on the floor for a first look. Nate can't wait! http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s283 ... ern003.jpg

    Positioning the sides

Many thanks stevesteve, and all others. Seems rather obvious now, and am feeling rather foolish. It's a great thing to receive help from experienced builders from around the world. The only drawback is revealing my foolishness internationally! Hopefully I can get the time to...

    Positioning the sides

Ok, I'm revealing my ignorance, but here goes. The stem and stern are provided in Uncle Johns kit. They are symetrical. Here is a picture: <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s283/VTFogg/Positioningthesidesonthestemster-1.jpg"...

    Positioning the sides

I'm in a fog (pun intended) about the position of the sides on the stem and stern pieces for an Uncle John's pirogue. Is it right to move the side down to the bottom of the stem piece so that the bottom of the side ends where the narrower piece of the stem meets the wider piece like this...

Beginning a UJ Pirogue for the 1st time - Again!

My oldest boy Sam, and I clamped and cut the side boards for the bow and stern tonight. We'll attach the sides to the stem and stern within a couple of days. - VTFogg http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s283 ... wstern.jpg

Beginning a UJ Pirogue for the 1st time - Again!

Another question: Before assembling the pieces, should I apply a thin coat of epoxy with a roller to seal the wood? I think it would be a lot easier with the pieces laying down on the table.

Beginning a UJ Pirogue for the 1st time - Again!

Well I ran out of time to do the flip side this morning, but as soon as I got back in from skiing I jumped on side 2. My wife is starting to think I'm going off the deep end, as I grabbed her hair dryer and let it run on high for 30 minutes to warm the basement! I also used it directly on the...

Beginning a UJ Pirogue for the 1st time - Again!

Hi Jack and Mick, Thanks for keeping an eye out for me. The top 3 pictures above are the outside of each of the pieces, and show the joint after laying fiberglass mat on top. I was planning to do the same (no plywood block) on the inside of the sides and bottom. Is that ok? In your first...

Jack, I tried your test and all seems fine. I just mixed up 3 ounces of epoxy, but glass cloth so that it covers 5 inches out from the joint and tried my first fiberglass splice. Many thanks to Mick for pointing me to the JEM Watercraft site with instructions on how to do this. I think it...
