I am around 5' 10" and I wound up paddling off and on for 6 hours. Here is a picture of my paddle off the boat ramp just before you get to Skidaway Island here in Savannah.
I got there at low tide and just followed the edge of the water around the point in the upper left corner. Once the...
Got out this morning to give my paddle a indepth trial. Was on the water by 6:00am and off around 12:30pm. Paddle got me where i was going and where i needed to be!! Now if that would only be where the fish were at because it wasnt a good fishing day for me. Only a couple of small croaker...
What lengths of each type of wood do you have? When I build my custom paddle I have a bunch of cherry and maple in long lengths for my handle and then I have a collection of exotic woods I plan to use on the paddles.
I have also just added anchor trolleys to my boat. Check my build thread http://www.neilbank.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=5899 to see how my install looks.
While waiting for an order of resin to arrive so i can finish up the 2nd boat, I got busy and added a couple of items to the first boat. After going out a couple of times I realized that an anchor trolley and bow handle were things I needed. Using Ron's method of making soft pad eyes, I...
Put the finishing touches on the paddle tonight. First did some clean up sanding of the fiberglass resin and got things nice and smooth.
The finished handle.
Cant wait to give it a good work out this weekend trying to find some spotted trout, redfish or whiting.
The way my seat is positioned against the back brace, my feet rest upon the forward brace so I have already a built in foot brace to push off, so as of right now I dont have to add any other type of foot brace.
After reading about others who made up their own double paddle, I decided to do the same. I had taken my boat out a couple of times using only a single paddle and found that I was tacking more like a sail boat instead of tracking in a straight line. Below you will see my two paddles I used to...
I just went to the closest WallyWorld and bought a small beach chair. Worked very well and was pretty comfortable. Also just used a single 5ft paddle from WW. Eventually I will make me one with the wood I have in my garage, but will need to finish my son's boat first.
With all the rain we have been getting here lately, I haven't had a chance to try out my boat. But with the long weekend, I said I was going to get it wet one way or the other. Around noon today the weather broke up enough to give me a chance and get out on the water. Didnt have my son's...
That is the only thing I can think of I probably overlooked during this build. I guess i will see how the boat handles and what situations I get into with it. As was said earlier, things can be added at any time. But i realize some kind of handle or rope will be needed. I could always just...
Got busy today and applied the varnish to the decks and insides of the boat. Here is a pic of it prepped for varnish.
Pics of varnish applied to the decks and sides.
A closeup of the stern deck
And finally a pic of the bottom and outer rails.
Now to let it set for the week and cure...
Finally got back to working on boat #1 today. Started this morning by putting a final coat of resin on the decks and glassed one section of boat #2 before I ran out of resin. Once it was dried I taped off the edge between the decks and outer rails for painting the outsides of the boat.
Sorry...
As of right now, I am not planning for any hatches. I want to get out and use them a few times to see how the boat performs. To start with they are just going to be enclosed spaces for floatation. I can always go back and add hatches if i need them. I would probably get some like the ones...
Here is a picture from today when I was ready to fill the gap between the outer rail and the deck.
Next are a couple of pictures after I had applied the thickened resin to the gaps.
Once the gaps were filled, I applied a soaking coat of resin to the 2nd deck.
Later this week, I will...
No problems with the weights on top of the deck. The deck didnt have a pefect, flat fit on top of the rails. I buttered the edge of the rails with thickened resin, weighted it down and clamped it with a couple of web straps. The left over resin I then pressed into the opening along the edge...
