    Trip Betwixt the Holidays

Another thing I learned, my photography skills aren't as good as I thought. That is indeed a log burning in the middle. I was "encouraged" to take a picture and post it here :|

    Trip Betwixt the Holidays

So, the clubs didn't come in very handy, as the ground was frozen solid. Well, not exactly, but when you step out of the boat onto Spanish Moss and it crunches under foot, you know you're in for a cold time on the bayou. I broke camp early (today). My wife caught a bug and was...

    Trip Betwixt the Holidays

Maybe when I get a little older I'll learn from yall and pack earlier. :( Actually, I'm pretty much done. A couple odds and ends to attend to before I hit the sack. Of course, the pirogue is still in the garage. I'll take care of that in the morning. Had to do a "dry fit" this evening...

Built this to hold the boat on it's side: Good for applying epoxy on the sides:

    Bending Luan

Luan ply? I bought the 4mm ply for my UJ. Bent real easy; dry. Here I was gluing the ribs in place: Here is a few different angles gluing the bottom to the sides:

    August Fishing

Redfish slabs seem to be the preferred method over here (at least, for the folks cleaning the fish  ). Marinate the slabs with Italian salad dressing and throw on the grill. Mmm, mmm, good :D

    Bracing

Hate to buck the trend here, but I feather my paddle blades. I have noticed the difference in windy conditions. One hand locked, one hand loose, it's just second nature to me now.

    Kayak repair question

I'm in no rush to get it done. Although, this is the first weekend since I don't know when that we don't have plans, so if the rain ever stops, I might give the west system a try.

    Kayak repair question

I posted another thread about a recent family get away and all the fun we had. Well, it seems my over sized chiquita banana didn't fair so well. Upon closer inspection, it seems the boat was dragged across the concrete, leaving a "smallish" hole in the very end of the keel. Not as big as the...

    Fontainebleau State Park

Not so much a trip report... more of a family vacation report. Just got back from a long weekend trip just up the road at Fontainebleau State Park. We stayed in the new (since Katrina) cabins on Lake Pontchartrain. It was an extended family gathering and really just an excuse to get out of...

    Design Softwear

There are some really good sketchup users on the woodworking forums. I find it most useful for straight lines and "easy" angles. Complex angles are NOT easy. I used the plans for the Bear Mountain Prospector Canoe to build this model in sketchup: I was basically lofting the station molds...

Fontana Lake 4th of July Week

Beautiful. I was on the other side... I was on an extended-family vacation in the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area for the 4th. You know all the traffic jams, tail lights, crowded sidewalks, and car exhaust that you were escaping? That's where I was  Not quite the type of trip I'm used...

    What is the most important

I didn't mean to high-jack the thread. Just want to reiterate that the bent shaft made a world of difference in my canoe. When I first got it, it was to the point that I thought it wasn't working :? It was so darn effortless to paddle. For a <$100 investment, I made my canoe paddling...

    What is the most important

Since I don't have the luxury of many different boats to paddle, the one sure thing that I know of, that is independent of which boat you use, is a bent shaft canoe paddle. Several years ago, I laid out the cash and ordered one from Bending Branches. No matter what kind of boat you have, if...
