For a good mix of the "cheaper" paints/finishes with outdoor exposure, use some inexpensive car wax, or a small tarp, and store the boat in a somewhat shaded (at least through the hottest parts of the day) area. Good exterior house paints hold up well in exposure.
I dry bend mostly, a little at time. Unless it's marine ply, wetting it wouldn't be the best. Now, I have taken a soaked towel to wet the "inside" and "outside" plies a tad to ease some stress if the fibres looked like they would "pull".

Well, put it in Poppa's pond Thursday! Karl is taking to the paddling very well...I just sat back while he went all over the pond. Had about a 5kt wind, so he got some good education on tracking and angling in all directions.
I can see a few minor problems with the test.
1. The model and weights are not representative of truly comparative bouyancy and loading.
2. Weight is not at fore/aft centerline, contributing to rolling moment.
3. No sides removes the corrective tendencies of those sides.
