    Rowing

These oars seem to be reasonably priced. Any suggestions on figuring out a good length? http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SearchResults?searchOption=products&hvarSearchString=oars&storeId=10151&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&CMID=TOP_SEARCH_GO&x=12&y=14

    Dogwood's maiden voyage

So far, that's where I like it for solo paddling. I haven't tried taking a passenger yet. If I use the kayak paddle, I scoot the seat foward closer to the center, but for the canoe paddle, it's better for me to sit further back. I've only had this boat in the water three times, and I'm...

    Dogwood's maiden voyage

I did take 3/4" off the bottom of the seat and then tacked some of that carpet runner that comes off the roll at Lowes onto the now stubby feet. I turned the carpet backing side out and it makes it real non slip. It seems I like to sit low and far back in a Pirouge. I need another seat...

    Dogwood's maiden voyage

I see that I got some minor gouges in the outside edge seam near the ends of my boat . I expected this and added an extra triangle shaped piece of 4oz cloth at each end to act as a skid plate. The boat ramp is real rough for traction and it's hard to get the boat on and off my truck without...

    Dogwood's maiden voyage

I didn't want to push my luck and try for two pix in one post, so here's another pic. Even though the park was deserted due to the weather, there was a small crowd of admirers waiting to ask me about the boat when I got back to the ramp.

    Dogwood's maiden voyage

I took my UJ pirouge to Lake Tarpon and had the whole place to myself since it was cold and windy by Florida standards. This boat paddles very nice. I like both the kayak paddle and the canoe paddle. At first I thought the seat and therefore the center of gravity was too high and the boat...

    New guy, new Pirouge.

I got the epoxy and 4oz cloth from Fiberglass Coatings in St. Pete, FL. They are very helpful and full of advice, but not everything adds up in my book. They say latex paint will not adhere and I need to use epoxy paint. I have built theatrical props out of 1/4" Luan, their epoxy and...

    New guy, new Pirouge.

My boats all built. Glass and epoxy in and out. The boat looks OK as a natural and I figure to varnish the inside, but I do want to paint the outside the same color as a boat from my youth. I have the latex high gloss house paint and I'm hearing different things about prepping the surface...

A Comfortable Pirogue (Boat) seat ..ya can make

I glued the 1/4" shear plates to the sides and glued and screwed the dowels in place and now I see that the shear plates are adding strength to the back. If a lardass leans back real had, those shear plates will keep the back of the chair from breaking...I hope. I made a booboo by not...

A Comfortable Pirogue (Boat) seat ..ya can make

I got all the parts for my seat cut, sanded and ready for assembly. I see where to put the 1/4" shear plates, but what are they for? What's their purpose?

    Glassing with cloth

No air compressor, just electric leaf blower. The place that sold me the epoxy suggested improper mixing. Either too little hardener or not blended well enough. Most of the bad stuff is sanded off and the hull is not tacky anymore. I'll try recoating it tomorrow.

    Glassing with cloth

I did a saturation coat on bare Luan. The next day, I covered it with 4oz cloth and squeegeed epoxy to wet out the cloth and that came out fine. Two days later, I scuffed up the whole thing with an orbital sander, blew off the dust with air and then wiped it down with a damp rag and then a dry...
