    Lapstrake ?

A pirouge is sorta like a lapstrake with just 3 planks. A strip boat is sorta like a lapstrake with lots and lots of planks A skin on frame is sorta like a lapstrake thats very thick at the overlaps and very thin everywhere else. Since a pirough, a strip boat, and a skin on frame can all be...

    Lapstrake ?

Oh, KayakJack. I am definitely referring to epoxied overlapping joints with THIN plywood since I was addressing the issue of lightweight boats. That whole fasterner thing would be almost a nonstarter. Of course the same could be said of pirouges and strip construction when you are talking about...

    Lapstrake ?

Those overlaps are going to add significantly to the rigidity of the hull. If I recall correctly rigidity is a function of thickness cubed. So those overlapped parts are going to be 2 cubed or 8 times as rigid as the non overlapped sections. Lets say 10 percent of the "planks" consist of...

    Don Starkell

Here is a statement from their terms and conditions of use: (2) reproduce, republish, modify, archive, distribute, store, archive or commercially exploit the Content without our prior written consent; nor I'd say cutting and pasting the whole article (minus the picture) probably violates that...

    UJ bayou skiff

Re: 1st post! UJ bayou skiff Nice work! As far as hatches go. Aren't the rectangular hatches usually a bit bigger than the round ones (and more expensive)? If money is an issue I think I'd go with the round ones and if you find the round to be a bit of pain you can always take it out and put...

    Don Starkell

Very interesting and impressive. I wonder when you paddle pretty much all day every day for 2 years does your mind and body get so conditioned that when you finally stop do you suffer some sort of OCD like symptoms where you have strong urges to keep paddling? Oh, and its probably not a good...

    Tinting in Expoxy

Hi all. Our canoes are showing some serious wear and tear on the bow and stern due to the occasional encounters with logs, rocks, sandbars, and gravel. So we bought a some "skid plates" which are basically elongated pear shaped pieces of kevlar. You epoxy these on the bow and stern of the...

    New Pirouge Build

I'd think you could even do it yourself with a circular saw and some sort of homemade jig. And if you could live with strips that had been scarfed together from shorter sections I'd imagine the raw wood (privacy fencing boards perhaps?) would be even cheaper. Check around, particularly on the...

    Arauco Plywood?

I didn't notice the glue color. And the top sheet was missing any sticker that would tell you the weather grade of the wood. Though as mommicked notes it does sound like it at least fairly water resistant. And I would imagine that if you ordered some from a lumber place they should be able to...

    Arauco Plywood?

Swung by Lowes again the other day and got a better look at their Arauco plywood. It did have a nice finish on each side. Another interesting thing about it though were the plies. It was only 3 ply, but then again for 5mm thick plywood that isnt that uncommon. But I did note a difference between...

    Arauco Plywood?

It did not appear to be a special order at my Lowes because there was big pile of it in a place made for it like all the other wood. It is somethat that wasn't there a few months ago so it does appear to be a new item. Like I said, I couldn't tell if was heavier or about the same weight as Luan...

    Arauco Plywood?

Hi Guys. Was in Lowes the other day and ran across Arauco plywood. Looked pretty nice, wasn't too pricey, and is supposedly "green" so no darn dirty hippies were harmed in its making. I couldn't tell if it was as light as Luan or not. I did a quick internet search and ran across a guy that said...

    What Works / What Don't

I think it would be interesting to approach a university that has water testing tanks. Often students have lab projects where they do some calculations/computer modeling and then do some lab testing (or visa versa). And, often the students/professors are looking for interesting projects to do...

    What Works / What Don't

I almost always paddle with a kayak paddle. But unless I am trying to really make some distance or speed or am fighting a strong current or wind I purposely paddle "wrong" using mostly my arms. My torso muscles seem to be strong enough. Its my girly arms that need a workout :)

    Waterproof paint/epoxy for pottery?

Hi all. This isn't technically a boat building question so I hope its okay to ask here. But I figure you guys know a good bit about paint, epoxy and water. I bought 3 large glazzed ceramic pots. Beautiful rustic blue. I am going to use them to make a casscading waterfall/fountain where one...

    Corrosion, Aluminum/Brass/Stainless Steel

Hi guys. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll keep them in mind and when I finish this thing six years :) from now I make a command decision. I figure I should tell you what these metal angles are for. With a skin on frame kayak you can't exactly run some straps on it and pull it really tight...

    Corrosion, Aluminum/Brass/Stainless Steel

Hi all. Working on my SOF kayak (well, actually thinking about it more than doing it). It occurred to me that I would like to put in some aluminum angle in various places for various reasons. Long term it would probably need to be replaced when the skin is, so it can not be permanent permanent...

    Another Brazos Blast

These trip reports and photos from other posters always leave me with mixed feelings. First I feel bad because their boats are way prettier than my old beat up commercial boat or my unfinished SOF kayak. But then I realize there are some folks that actually carry even more junk than me, so thats...

    Okatoma Creek, Mississippi

Thanks for that interesting report. I've havent been over there yet but I recognize some of the spots from old West Florida Canoe and Kayak club videos. If you are driving between Atlanta and New Orleans on a regular basis you oughta swing by southern Alabama or the Panhandle of Florida for some...
