I have found a scarf joint is not hard to do in regular plywood. I use a jig for my circular saw like the one in the link. Scarfing luan has not worked for well for me. I can make a strong joint, but a clean look, and fit has been impossable. The paper thin outer layers are too fragile. If the ends are not a perfect match (flush) the outer layer will get sanded away. Just sanding the glue run out will damage it. Not a problem if painted over, but ugly if a natural finish is used. Butt joints are about as visable.
I have not tried this, but a combination scarf and but joint may produce a less obvious looking joint. Cut the ends on slight oposite angles, and butt together for a tight and level fit. Then back the joint with fiberglass.
