Following up on Belly's question about nails, I have one about boards.

Home Depot has gray-primed redwood in 1" x 8" x 10' or so. It looks like the boards are pieced together, but they seem to be knot-free. Are they really, or just puttied over? Are they suitable for gunwales and stringers?

Similarly, Lowes has a product that looks like pre-painted wood, maybe used for trim fascia? I thought it was called armor board, but didn't find that on the web. Is is suitable for gunwales and stringers?

Thanks. There's not much in the box stores that is longer than 12' - S4S pine molding and lattice (too small), southern yellow pine (heavy), and 'select' 2x4's. I'll try the real lumberyard, or keep scarfing 1" x 2" x 8' cedar. Folks out west must get the good stuff - the Lowes online shows all sorts of long cedar, all "Unavailable".
