Even though I added one to mine, I'm not so sure it's really "needed," at all.
Mine runs the full length of the bottom and is only about a half-inch in cross section, and it does help a bit with tracking. But so does working on my paddling technique.
While helping a little with tracking, it also cuts back on the boat's turning ability. That's a trade-off you can't avoid.
All in all, I'll probably remove the keel, when I have to touch up the graphite/epoxy bottom.
As I was told, it's better to get the boat in the water and try it out for a couple of weeks. Then, if you think you really need the keel, it can be added, very easily.
