The next time you hear a politician use the word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about whether you want the 'politicians' spending YOUR tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases.

A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
D. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.
E. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in your brain, let's take a look at New Orleans It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division. Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D), is presently asking the Congress for $250 BILLION to rebuild New Orleans. Interesting number, what does it mean?

A. Well, if you are one of 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every man, woman, child), you each get $516,528.
B. Or, if you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787.
C. Or, if you are a family of four, your family gets $2,066,012.

Washington, D.C .. HELLO!!! ... Are all your calculators broken??

Tax his land,
Tax his wage,
Tax his bed in which he lays.
Tax his tractor,
Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes is the rule.
Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.

Tax his ties,
Tax his shirts,
Tax his work,
Tax his dirt.

Tax his tobacco,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he tries to think.

Tax his booze,
Tax his beers,
If he cries,
Tax his tears.

Tax his bills,
Tax his gas,
Tax his notes,
Tax his cash.

Tax him good and let him know
That after taxes, he has no dough.

If he hollers,
Tax him more,
Tax hi m until he's good and sore.

Tax his coffin,
Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in which he lays.
Put these words upon his tomb,
'Taxes drove me to my doom!'

And when he's gone,
We won't relax,
We'll still be after the inheritance TAX!!

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago, and our nation was the most prosperous in the world. We had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in the world, and Mom stayed home to raise the kids. What happened? Can you spell 'politicians!'

And I still have to "press 1" for English?

Excellent post, Jack. The part about rebuilding New Orleans especially turns my stomach. Of the 2 plus million dollars per family, how much do you think would end up in the hands of state and local politicians and contractors? I am embarrassed to call myself a Louisiana resident sometimes.

This state has a long history of corruption. Did you know the ban on lotteries in the United States in the 1800's stemmed from the corrupt state lottery in Louisiana? Yeah----that's my state.

About fifty years ago, my dad was a charter member of the local Rotary Club. I'd go to lunch with him and meet all kinds of guys. (Only men in those days; meetings are prettier now.) One of them was Ralph Young. He'd been the football coach at Michigan State College (hadn't made university status yet), and then the athletic director. By the time I'd met Ralph, he'd retired and was in the Michigan legislature. Great guy.

He said one day, "The definition of an honest politician is one who - once bought - STAYS bought."

I guess that, in the arena where they work, that's about the best we can expect. And, frankly, reading history, it has always been thus.

Jack,

That is a superb rant!!.

I thought this sort of government BS only happened here.

250 billion is an inconcievable figure, especially considering New Orleans only has a population of less than half a million souls. (I thought it was much bigger than that)

Fellas,

I been searchin' hard ta see where the centralized guviment haz the rite ta spend tax money on New Orleans, Malibu, Florida after a bad storm, ice storms, forest fires, earthquakes, etc. I jest dont see how they kin do it. Responsible folks buy insurance. Others look ta guviment fer charity when the hard times come.

I cannot find any authority in the Constitution for the public charity. Franklin Pierce

If Congress can determine what constitutes the general welfare and can appropriate money for its advancement, where is the limitation to carrying into execution whatever can be effected by money? Senator William Draden

The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism. But under the name of 'liberalism' they will adopt every fragment of the Socialist program, until one day America will be a Socialist nation, without knowing how it happened. Norman Thomas

There are a hundred billion stars in the galaxy. That used to be a huge number. But it's less than the national deficit! We used to call them astronomical numbers. Now we should call them economical numbers. Richard Feynman

Continued dependence upon welfare induces a spiritual disintegration fundamentally destructive to the national fiber. To dole out relief in

The real disaster of Katrina was that society broke down. An entire community could not cope. Liberalism, the idea that good intentions and

I will not go into an argument to prove that Congress has not the power to appropriate this money as an act of charity. Every member on this floor knows it. We have the right as individuals, to give away as much of our own money as we please in charity; but as members of Congress we have no right to appropriate a dollar of the public money. Senator David Crockett
