Robin and I did a short recce day trip yesterday, in part, looking for nice wilderness camp sites and partly because we have never paddled this creek together before.
Poona Creek is tidal, mangrove lined, with a mostly sandy bottom and banks and rock bars and small tidal rapid races further up stream. At low tide, power boat access is pretty much restricted by the very shallow water and sand banks to about the first mile or so. In short it makes for a very nice paddle!
Suitable camping spots would make it ideal.
Put in was at the mouth, at the gentlemanly hour of 08.30 and about 2 hours after low tide. We headed out from Poona Villiage, across the sand flats in about 3 inches of water to the channel and then, with the surging tide behind us headed up stream. Robin was in her plastic sea kayak (she feels safer and more comfortable in it at the moment) and I was in my trusty little Laker. (I just love this boat)
Summer has arrived here with a vengeance and by 0915, it was allready approaching 90f with no wind.

By 10.00, it was time for a cooling swim on a sand bank.

We paddled as far as the road bridge, probably about 6 or 7 miles after several cooling stops and by this time, the heat and humidity was making things pretty uncomfortable, so we decided to call it a day, and wait in the shade under the bridge for the tide to turn, have some lunch and some more swims.

Paddle back was scenic and relaxed. All in all, a great day on the water with my best friend. We hope you all enjoyed our little story.
