    Perfect length for paddling trip

I've done a few canoe camping trips in the Quetico (the Canuck side of the Boundary waters). We usually went for around 8-10 days -- any longer and supplies (not to mention hygiene!) get to be an issue. On those trips, we'd portage in, crossing up to 5 lakes to get to our spot and then set up...

    Rub rail problem

I think you're right Matt and I'm pretty disgusted with myself because I didn't think it through before I went to the time, expense and trouble to mill the rods and cut notches for the stems and angle the ends. As long as I've put this much into it though, maybe I should give it a shot with...

    Rub rail problem

Chuck thanks for the reply. I was utterly incomprehensible. I have a solid one piece closet bar in which I cut a 1/4" wide goove lengthwise 3/4" deep which I plan to slide the top of the sides into leaving a nice half round on either side for a symmetrical inside and out one piece rub rail...

    Rub rail problem

OK brain trust, here's the situation: I'm building 2 UJ pirogues 15' 5" 3mm meranti with 6" butt blocks of 1/4" luan. 4 rib option. Novice. I had liked the pix of closet bar rails I had seen so I decided to go that route, but I thought I'd go one better and not split the bars with a rabbet...

    About to glass questions??

Well Mick, I'm laughing my butt blocks off! I was too much the artiste when I doubted the butt block suggestion! I snapped a panel in half moving it! Better now than later though! So today I'm installing 6" wide butt blocks with 1/4 inch Luan and I'm grateful for the advice which...

    About to glass questions??

I'm planning on glassing both sides and with the fourth rib I was hoping that I wouldn't have to add the butt blocks. I put too much epoxy in the joints and they aren't as flat as they should have been, but they sure seem solid. If I can't sand them well enough, I'll give up the natural look...

    About to glass questions??

Thanks Mick! I'm actually building two at the same time - His 'n Hers. We have twin boys age 8 and we hope to get the whole family out on them this summer so I've got to bear down! I plan 15' 6" with the fourth rib. I'm using 3mm ply. The guy at Raka suggested an alternative to the scarfing...

    About to glass questions??

Howdy! I've been lurking and reading up on all your wisdom here for a time and I've finally started my UJ pirogue. It's going great so far. I got my stuff from Raka and they were really helpful. They gave me all kinds of advice without me having to even ask. I wanted to let you know...
