    Sometimes Miracles Happen

Redhawk, that is an amazing story! Great detective work by the way. Cross referencing like that was brilliant, I think. Just goes to show that you should NEVER give up. George

    Sourdough bread and Corn muffins

Pouring the batter into a preheated cast iron skillet with some oil in it is the only way I've ever done it. It seems to be one of the better ways to season a pan, too. GBinGA

    Jon boat build

It depends on the motor, and also how you are going to haul it. If you are using a trailer, and a good size motor, weight isn't going to be that much of an issue. I'd guess that with anything 20 hp or more, the extra weight from the plywood would be trivial in terms of performance and it would...

    Springfield XD / XDM

I'm not seeing a Springfield LDA... Maybe Para USA? A 1911 with a double action only trigger system? GBinGA

    Springfield XD / XDM

I'm saving my nickels and dimes for a new pistol. The Ruger 9mm I have is a dependable chunk of metal, but I don't shoot it particularly well. And it suffers from the malady that all double action autos do - you have to either transition from double action trigger on the first shot to single...

    Just started some winter maintenance

Is it possible that fasteners have something to do with the dark spots on the rubrails? I don't remember what fasteners you used. If they are reacting with the tannins and residual moisture in the wood, you might get dark spots regardless the varnish and so forth. GBinGA

    What Are Grits ?

As a multi-racial American (my mother was from Arkansas and my father was from Ohio) I reserve the right to put sugar on my grits and eat them with toast. I will admit that it has made me bald, but impotence has not been an issue. GBinGA

    New Paddling Partner.

Good for ya'll!! Big cities can be a lot of fun, if you have a guide who knows her way around. George

What knife do you carry on or with you?

Better picture of my everyday knives. Benchmade calls the lock mechanism the "axis lock". The metal button right next to the hinge pin slides back and forth to release the blade. Works better than any locking knife I've ever had. One nice thing about it is that you can pretty easily CLOSE...

What knife do you carry on or with you?

Carrying a boxcutter along with you seems like a good idea for all of the reasons John mentioned, so long as it doesn't put you over the limit on space or weight. The little skinny blades are fragile compared to a "real" knife, but they cut like nothing else for as long as they last. OK - show...

    Strip Build Wood Size

We should all try to protect ourselves from sanding dust as much as we can, regardless of the species. Chuck is right about certain species being more of an irritant than others (add mahogany to the list) but all wood dust is bad for your lungs. George By the way, if you are ripping with a...

    A traditional Australian Rowing Skiff

That's a good looking rowboat. I'm eager to see the build. George

    Building a ugly boat

I wonder if it would be good to glass one side of the panel before the build, as insurance against having a panel break on you as you bend it into shape. George

    Building a ugly boat

This is interesting. You could do all sorts of patterns in any sort of wood. I wonder how it compares strength wise? The plywood has alternating grain due to the layers of veneers. This is gonna be solid wood with all the grain running one way... of course it will be glassed inside and out...

laminating 4mm ply - for strength

Seems to me you would get a stronger product if you ripped thin strips of solid wood, rather than strips of thin plywood. Using plywood, probably 40% of the wood is going to be oriented the wrong way and offer no strength. If you want to be able to duplicate the dimensions and strength of what...

    why carry a stove

Done that. Once you have nothing but glowing coals, it's all the same (charcoal). Doesn't matter what kind of wood you started with. I think hardwood works better, if it is available. Density, I suppose. I've heard of cooking steak directly on the coals but never tried it. Seems like a...

Pork Roast , ( Home made Neffleys ) and canned Sauerkraut.

Ditto. That's what my mom made with chicken sometimes and with pork roast and kraut other times. That's what I normally associate with "dumplings". Fluffy, like a wet biscuit. (which sounds horrible but they are really very good - just the way Chuck describes them) Then there are the...

    Kayak paddle shape

Seems to me that if you want less muscle / joint strain, you go to a lower gear and pedal faster. At least that's the way you do it when cycling. Move to a lower gear, increase the RPM, easier on the knees. You don't stay in high gear and just not push as hard... it won't work. Now of course...

A song for all of you to sing while working.

I think they lifted some of the words from a nursery song called "Jesus Loves the Little Children". Saw the video on this. They forgot to give the kids uniforms. If you are going to have an Obama Youth movement, there ought to be uniforms. They could start with something like this, I...
