    1st Timer Build Log

:D It's not as bad as it looks in the picture. It's an off white, not white. Don't get me wrong, it's bright, but it will be dirty soon enough.

    1st Timer Build Log

I put on the 2nd coat to the inside tonight. It looks like 1 more coat should do it. I used Interlux Brightside paint for the inside. This paint has terrible fumes, dries really fast, and doesn't spread very easily but it has to be the hardest, toughest, highest gloss paint I've ever used. I...

    1st Timer Build Log

I'm all for no fiberglass but I don't think my craftsmanship is such that I could build a watertight boat without the use of the fiberglass and epoxy.

    1st Timer Build Log

Thanks...I do think I learned something about doing the inside though. I *think* it would be easier to tape one side only and start applying epoxy from the taped side down, to the bottom then up the other side. I had several instances where it was too tight and I had to remove the tape on one...

    Building an Uncle John's Pirogue

Hey Brian, Get yourself a set of plans from http://www.unclejohns.com/. They are very reasonably priced. Good luck!

    1st Timer Build Log

I got through sanding down the outside last night and applied a little test finish to a small area. After seeing it so nice and shiny for so long it kind of hurts to see it all dull. The finish will fix that right up though. I can feel how close I'm getting to being done and I'm getting...

    Epoxy thickness

That is really good to know. There were a couple of small places where I did hit fibers but they were very small and I stopped immediately. I was just worried to death with all the sanding I had to do to get everything smooth that I was losing strength. Thanks!

    Epoxy thickness

As I'm sanding and sanding and sanding the outside of my UJ pirogue tonight I started wondering if all the sanding I'm doing on the epoxy can or does weaken the hull. Is there a minimum thickness of epoxy required to make a strong boat or is the epoxy more about keeping the fiberglass attached...

    Another first time builder...

I with you buddy. Epoxy is definitely not the funnest finish I've ever put on. I put on what I hope to be the last coat on the inside tonight. If it is, it's the end of epoxy for me (woohoo!) and on to paint and finish.

    Bubbles under fiberglass

Going with the syringe sounds like the easiest thing to do. I'll give that a try. Thanks

    Bubbles under fiberglass

I've been searching around and can't find any info on what to do if you have some bubbles under the fiberglass? Do you just leave it or do something to repair it? I don't have any that are bigger than a dime. Thanks

    something different

Those are a couple of cuties there! I'm thinking you don't say no to much of anything that they ask you... :)

    how much glass?

Welcome roosterkiller. I'm working on an Uncle John pirogue that is about 15' 8" and I glassed the entire outside and inside. I bought 10 yds and it was just right. The roll literally ran out perfect on my last piece. This is my first also so I felt like I bought more than enough but I'm...

    1st Timer Build Log

Chuck, Do you do any kind of protective covering over the electrical tape to protect it from the water or do you just put it on there and replace when/if needed? My line is going to be a closer to the water line so I'm trying to figure out if the tape method will work for me. Thanks

    1st Timer Build Log

Finally got the inside glassed this weekend. It is much more difficult to do the inside as opposed to the outside. However, it was much easier to use the spreader because the epoxy can only run so far. Since I had the fabric laid out as individual pieces for each section between the ribs it...

That's sounds a lot easier than taping and painting. I'll do that!

I couple of shots of some fillets after applying epoxy. I can't express how thrilled I am on how good they turned out!
