    Resin application thickness question

When you wet out the fabric, should the resin be thick enough to completely cover the texture of the fabric or should you still be able see/feel the cloth's texture? I've never done this before but it looks like completely covering on the first pass would be too much. I always hear thin layers...

First time Pirogue Build - picture heavy

The brackets that you have for your paddles...is that something store bought or is it your custom addition? I want something like that.

    Glassed butt joint woops

Jimmy, Yes, it was the glass, not the wood. I'm not using any additional wood for the but joints. Just the 2 sides fiber glassed together. The crack isn't all the way through because it's still together I thought about clamping a long piece of wood to the sides for the solo turn while I was...

    Glassed butt joint woops

I'm using the glassed butt joint technique for my sides and bottom. I did the sides last night but I only did one side. Since this is the first time I've ever done any fiber glassing I wasn't about to attempt doing both sides at once like I had read is the best way to go. I also read that you...

    1st Timer Build Log

Well, after screwing around trying to build some kind of scarf jig I finally decided to just go with fiber glassed butt joints. I put on my first fabric tonight on the side butt joints and it wasn't too bad. I'll have to wait to see how it turned out though. The hardest part of the night was...

    1st Timer Build Log

Sorry for the poor picture quality on some of these... This is the "fix" I made to the stems. It turned out better than I expected. I used my tenoning jig to cut the scarfs for the rub rails. The gluing face probably isn't as long as it should be but I had to stomp a test board to get it to...

    1st Timer Build Log

Oh what a difference a little sanding makes. The rub rail scarfs actually look great. There is one that isn't great though. A question about the rub rails. There are some slight twists along the length of the rub rails. Is this going to be a problem? I would think that once they got...

    1st Timer Build Log

I finished gluing up the rub rails last night. I'm not the happiest about the scarf joints as they are not the tightest joints I've ever made. Hopefully, they will be fine. Progress has been slow lately. I'll have to get the epoxy and cloth before I put the sides and bottom together. Since...

    Another first time builder...

You know I'm on my first boat so I don't have any real experience in this area but if it were me, knowing how much time and effort I'm putting into mine so far, I would spend another $11 and get another sheet. No doubt.

    Some fiberglassing questions

Thanks for the info. My plywood only has 1 pretty side so I've decided to paint the outside and leave the inside natural.

Damn cold weather. I couldn't even get into the workshop tonight, the locks are frozen solid!

    1st Timer Build Log

Hmmm...I guess you're right. I must have done something else wrong even though I feel confident about my measurements. The rabbit joint portion of the stem where the sides attach to the stem have to be 10 mm at least. No matter, I glued in some wood and it looks great and I feel much better...

    1st Timer Build Log

Well, it was slow going tonight. First, my tablesaw blade dulls out on. So, I started jointing some new wood I got for the bumpers and I'll be damned if my jointer knives didn't dull out. I have other saw blades but no knives. Definitely not my night.

    Another first time builder...

I said before that I was going to use butt joints but then I started thinking about a jig for the router and after a quick search I found this http://www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=36679 (not the first pics but ones about half way down) which is exactly what I was thinking. I'm going...

    Some fiberglassing questions

What you asked was exactly right. I was tired and misread the question. I'm going as long as possible with 2 sheets of ply. I'm not going to scarf like you did since it seems like a real pain. I'm going to do a butt joint but I am going to cut the ends at a 45 to help make the joint...

    Some fiberglassing questions

That's exactly what I was thinking which is why I wasn't looking forward to it if I had to do it that way. Thanks again Jimmy. Greg
