    Sabalo build log

Continued work on the foreword deck today. In between drying sessions, began work on the transom piece and the aft deck. The aft deck is dry fit. Will have to fill in some of the small cracks, but here she is. Not a whole lot to show but in my defense those angles had me stumped for a while...

    Sabalo build log

Didn't get much done this week. Made some wood chips today though! I managed to find a couple, literally 2 pieces, of cedar that was without knots at the local big box. Coupled with the few pieces of cypress from my stash, I may have enough for the decks. Remembered to get a pic of the cedar...

Mainly this sander.:) Built it for my home shop and ended up leaving it at work. We use it way more there and I have free use of it anytime anyway. We use it mainly for metal grinding, equipment maintenance, and such. They are very commonly used by custom knife makers.

    Sabalo build log

Finally finished cutting all of the parts out. I took my time and scored everything prior to cutting, which probably wasn't necessary. I had to re-cut two parts, broke one sanding, cut one wrong, I didn't score the replacement, with no splinter issues. I then spent the next few hours sanding...

    Intro and a Southern Sabalo

Good info. Never thought of "above/below the water line". Outside, no questions, glass all over. But on the inside, I could save weight and perhaps money by using epoxy only above the water line.

    Intro and a Southern Sabalo

Gives "options". For lighter weight and for an experienced builder one could just glass the seams. I am thinking full coverage inside and out with glass for durability and strength. The sheets I weighed were whole sheets, but the parts were already marked for cutting. There are lots of parts...

    Intro and a Southern Sabalo

I think I saw a chart that said 12lbs, but yes, close considering the process they use to make plywood. I think there will be more scraps on these two sheets than on the last two. But now you have me wanting to weigh the scraps once all the pieces are cut out. Probably will now. I did plan...

    Intro and a Southern Sabalo

I weighed the sheets this morning. Both sheets weighed 11 1/4 lbs. The average size was right at 3.8 mm, measured in several locations along both sheets. I do plan on weighing the finished boat and will let you know how that turns out.

    Intro and a Southern Sabalo

I'll try to weigh a full sheet before I cut them all, just to see. I still have two full ones left, marked but uncut. I will let you all know.

    Intro and a Southern Sabalo

I purchased it from Clark's Hardwood in Houston. 4mm about $63 per sheet. They actually had 3mm as well.

Point taken... but mostly because the rest will forced to be in the shed anyway. HOWEVER, I don't believe that Japanese pullsaw still works. You may have to send it to me so I can verify sharpness. :p

    Sabalo build log

Well, now I know why people pay extra to get the pre-cut wood kits. o_OMaybe I layout and measure slow, but it took me several hours to work through it all, not counting a couple of the parts that require a mirror image of another part. I don't know why but those frame layouts were the worst. By...

    Boat building table

I know the tubs you speak of, but those are actually galvanized trashcans only one of which is used for trash unless you ask my wife. She thinks they are both trash. The other holds small scraps of wood until I deem they are no longer usable. Most of what is visible in there is old cypress off...

    Boat building table

Well it isn't much to look at but the table is built. Ended up leaving about 2 inches of plywood over hang of the 2 x 4 frame. Countersunk all the screws on top to keep it smooth. Ended up being a smidge over 11 feet since I had used a piece off of the sheet I had. Wrapped the whole thing with 2...

    Boat building table

Thanks guys, sounds easy enough. I already have two of the folding horses mentioned so I may just pick up a couple more so it can be disassembled and stored. It will have a smooth top, a sturdy re-inforced underside, and definitely will be wrapped in plastic.

    Boat building table

New guy question, but, I am about to embark on my first build, a Sabalo 12 SOT. I am not keen on the idea of building this thing on the floor. I have scrap ply and 2 x 4's, may have to pick up some screws/nails. What are some general heights, widths, and lengths do you guys like for a build...

    Intro and a Southern Sabalo

Consider this a bit of an introduction. I am a south Louisiana guy and I like making my own stuff. So naturally, when I realized I "needed" a kayak, the search began. Since I am not a housewife from the 1950's, no offense to them, but tupperware kayaks just never gave me that warm fuzzy. So...
