    Another first time builder...

As I've said earlier, not much progress over the summer. Trying to get back after it again... Here's where I'm at... Here's the jig I built to hold the boat on it's side: (and now maybe the accusations of a "clean shop" will go by the wayside) Finishing up the fill coats on the sides...

How Much Did Your UJ Cost?

Luan ply and red oak rub rails and ribs from Home Depot, probably $50 - 75. Multiple trips to West Marine buying the small cans of epoxy and hardener ('cause I didn't know what the hell I was doing), at least triple the cost of the wood, at least. And I'm still not finished! Been...

Piper - I'm still around, just been a busy summer. Still busy with the kids back in school, but I have managed to sneak some time on the boat here and there. I'm close to having the exterior finished. I'm ready to finish this thing and get it in the water!

Unfortunately, not much more to report. With the wife home from school all summer, the "honey do" list has taken priority over the pirogue. I have managed to slap on a coat of epoxy from time to time, but no real progress to speak of. I built a jig to hold the boat on edge for...

    report on the"Another Pirogue Expedition"

Pre-K, we had a pair of those biggies that hung out around our house. I recall a similar behavior. Really neat to see. Haven't seen them since. :( Either they were victims of the storm, or they got blown up north somewhere.

    report on the"Another Pirogue Expedition"

Re: report on the another Pirogue Expedition Nice report and pics. Kinda sorry I missed it, but kinda not. :? Nothing like camping in Louisiana. See any noteworthy wildlife (that you didn't cook)?

Tava Omnium water shoe , my new ones for comfort

Chuck, I'm curious to know how well these hold up. When I bought my first pair of Tevas (almost 15 years ago), those things lasted 10 years. Best damn footwear I have EVER owned. Only reason I got rid of them was because I replaced them with another pair of Tevas and my wife-to-be (at the...

    Cane Bayou (lots of pics)

Some scenery: Tammany Trace rails-to-trails bridge. Around the first turn after the put in. I've actually ridden my bike from the house over this bridge. It goes all the way from Slidell to Covington. Hardwood forest. Wide water. Before you get to Lake Pontchartrain. Getting closer to the...

    Cane Bayou (lots of pics)

After a stressful week of work and after suffering a mild case of burnout over here, I decided I needed to get on the water. Ethan and I loaded up the battleship and headed to Cane Bayou between Lacombe and Mandeville, LA. Put in is on Hwy 190. Cane Bayou separates Fountainebleau State Park...

    Another first time builder...

Not much progress to report. As much as I enjoy the woodworking aspect of this process, I'm beginning to hate the epoxy aspect. I should have just bit the bullet and bought the big a$$ containers of resin and hardener. Anyway, I'm still working on my fill coats on the exterior. I'm at the...

    Bubbles under fiberglass

I'm struggling with this whole epoxy business myself. Thankfully I only had a few small-ish bubbles. A couple of them, I just cut out the glass as they were smaller than a fingernail and built up with epoxy. I've got one that is narrow, but long along one stem. I'm thinking of cutting it out...

Looking good Greg. I'm learning that this is more art than science. I'm still working on my fill coats on the outside. Keep running out of epoxy.

    Nantahala May '09

I like this one: Kinda looks like you're trying to schooch your butt up out of the water. I did the Nantahala in a duckie years ago. Great fun. I'm pretty sure I looked the same, if not a little bit scared'er

    surface prep question

So I'm thinking I'll do a light-wet-sanding with those foam sanding blocks they sell at Home Depot. Picked up a 220 grit the other day. I'll swing by and get one or two more this afternoon, in addition the usual odds and ends. Next question... it's supposed to be raining all weekend here...
