new guy here wondering about pirogues in large lakes

Pirogues were made for shallow backwaters for the most part. The flat bottom and low sides do not lend themselves to rogh water. NOW don't get me wrong they have been and will most likely continue to be used on large and somewhat rough water. That don't mean thats what they were designed for...

A learning experience on The Hiawasee

Hummm, I have been trying to think of a nice way to state my reply. Perhaps just some bullet points will do. 1. 23.5 miles is at least a three day trip. 2. Correct 20 ft is a bit long but better than nothing. 3. More time on the water is ALWAYS a good thing. 4. Wood is always better than...

    Seeing Dapper Al

VORs are on the way out. Use the GPS. All the sectionals in the world may be pretty to look at but knowing EXACTLY where you are is much better on your nervous system.

    Crude Oil Pipeline inspection flight

After spending a lot of years of my life doing that, I have to say, it is NOT a fun thing to do on a hot day. Matter of fact, it is plain miserable. Now drop the temp into the low 70s and you can have a nice time. Here is a pic of one of the five A/C that I broke while "having a good time"...

    blue tape removal question?

Don't know about the pros but, I usually wait until set up has started ie. tacky. Then when there is no chance of runs, i pull it off. The next coat is put on with a 1/2 in space to eliminate the sharp break line. I'm sure you will get other opinions. They won't be as good as mine...

    taping and filiting

Once the side pieces are joined. If you wish to move them , take a couple of scrap pieces and clamp over the joint. The epoxied joint, although strong may crack if moved without support AT THIS TIME. When the boat is complete, the joints will be stronger than the other parts.
