    New build - first build

Today I was able to get the first deck glued on. Used more of the chopped glass in the resin. Still hard to smooth out but sure sands quickly. First couple of pictures show the deck glued in place with weights on top. The next couple of pictures show the deck later in the day when I...

    New build - first build

I was afraid of that happening once the resin had hardened. I was pleasently suprised this morning when I checked them on my way to work and saw they had stayed down. I think it has more to do with the way the chopping gun throws the resin and chopped glass together. It will take alittle...

    New build - first build

The chopped fiberglass was 1/8th " to 1/4" pieces. Yes it was alot harder to smooth out as well. It had started cooling off this evening when I was doing it so the resin really felt like trying to spread peanut butter. I am interested to see what it looks like when it sets off and hardens and...

    New build - first build

Installed the bulkheads on boat 1 today after work. Instead of using wood dust for my filler, I had chopped up a bunch of fiberglass scraps from work and stirred them into the resin. It sure thickened the resin alot faster than just the wood dust. The bulkheads are made from 1/2" sandply...

    George L. Smith State Park

If you like a well kept camping area that rarely has a full campground except for the busiest of holiday weekends, this is a place you want to spend a weekend at. About 6 or 7 years ago, my 2 sons and I had a boys only weekend where we took our pop-up camper and rented a jon boat to have access...

    New build - first build

Got the other side gunnels glued and clamped on this week. Hopefully the weather will cooperate this weekend so I can try to install the bulkheads and deck. Amazing how just adding these makes the boat look even more ready for the water!! Can't wait to get her wet and slimed with the first fish!!!

    New build - first build

Here are a couple of pics from glueing the first set of gunnels to boat #1. As we all know, there are never enough clamps around and I didnt have any drywall screws long enough to screw each spacer down. Looks like I will have to work on them throughout the week. While I was waiting for...

    New build - first build

Finally got some time to work on the boats today. This past week I was able to finish glassing the inside of boat #1. Today I began cutting out the inner gunnels and spacers. Only had enough clamps to complete one side. Will glue on the others tomorrow. Also cut out the bulkheads to close...

    New build - first build

Started glassing the inside of boat #1. So far only the first two sections are covered on boat #1. While waiting for it to warm up today, I sanded and removed left over masking tape from boat #2's fillets. Still have a little more to sand but should be ready soon. Now only have to wait on my...

    New build - first build

Cold weather put progress to a slow crawl. Now that the weather is warming up I will try to get some more done. Last weekend I was able to get both filleted and a 2nd coat of resin on the outside of the 2nd boat. I am planning to apply the 3rd coat on the 2nd one tomorrow and then start...

    New build - first build

Finally got some free time to get back to work on the 2 boats this weekend. Boat #1 has the 3 coats of resin applied and Friday I was able to get started on applying the fiberglass to Boat #2. Here is the pics of boat #1 taped off ready for filleting. http://i433.photobucket.com/albums/qq53...

    New build - first build

    New build - first build

Finally got another chance to work on the boats yesterday due to the fact of only working 40 hrs a week now. Our company has been tightening the purse strings over the past month so overtime was one of the first to go. Now once we get overtime back........I might need to put a cot under my...

    New build - first build

Finally got some free time today to get back to work on our boats. Had to dodge some small rain showers this morning, but luckily it didn't rain hard enough to wash me out, stayed cloudy but no rain. Started out today by glueing on the rub rails to boat #2. Once those were clamped on...

    New build - first build

I used a section of 3", schedule 40 pvc pipe cut in 1 1/2 section. First I ripped the pipe lengthwise on the tablesaw. One word of warning if you decide to make these and make your first cut on the tablesaw. As you finish your cut, the pipe will start to squeeze down on the blade so be...

    New build - first build

Dont worry, plenty of mistakes are still to be made here. I like learning how everybody else does the same things in building one of these. For as few parts that go into builiding one of these boats, there are many ways to get to the finished product.

    New build - first build

After finally getting more than one or two hours of clear weather, I jumped in with both feet and started the build of 2 UJ pirogues, one for myself and one for my 13 year old son. I am a cabinet builder by trade, currently working for a company which builds custom cabinets for luxury jet...
