    Chattooga section IV 2004 photos

The last time I was up there they had taken all the poles out until 50 yards or so past the takeout at NOC. I used to love trout fishing up there, but you didn't want to get caught on the wrong side of the river when they opened the gates on the dam. It was a long walk to find a safe place...

    Chattooga section IV 2004 photos

A group of uf from work used to go to Nantahala every year. WAAAAY back in '88 I was up there with my skinny little girlfriend, a couple of buddies and their gf's. We lined up on river left, passed by billboard rock and went perfectly into the chute going over the falls. :D :D :D Well it...

    Home made hammock

Thanks for the compliment. I've always enjoyed tinkering so building boats, restoring cars, making my own gear,... it all fulfills my need to work with my hands. My parents used to repair pretty much anything that broke. Their thinking was "It's broke now, so I can't make it worse."

    Home made hammock

The hammock sleeps great. I'll probably re-tie it one more time to get just the right amount of material in the "W", but for 5 bucks I really can't complain. My son says he can't lie on his stomach, so I need to add a couple of guy out lines like the HH

    high dollar fishin' poles

There's a freindly competition going on right now over at SCkayakfishing.com to see who can catch the biggest fish on a kiddie pole. rules say it has to me an elcheapo marketed for kids and no modifications, braided line etc. Fun stuff. Last winter one of the guys landed a 12+ pound redfish...

    Home made hammock

If you use a biner, make sure it'll handle more than 2x your weight. The tension on the ropes is unbelievably high.

    Home made hammock

I didn't take pictures, I just followed the directions and pics on Just Jeff's page. The link is in my original post. Click on the home made gear tab and follow his decription. The best part about experimenting with it is: Once you get your lined secured to trees, you can remove the larks...

    Home made hammock

I did a modified "W" gather. I started with the full W and it raised the center line of the hammock too much and created a deep pouch on either side of center. I undid the whipping and modified the W so the center of it was only about 6 inches high. This worked out great for me. I think...

    Home made hammock

I was at Wal Mart earlier this week and they had 2.5 oz nylon in the $1 / yard bin. I bought 3 yards and a spool of nylon upholstery thread for hemming the edges. Well 45 minutes and $4.84 later I have a hammock... Or well my son has a hammock, this one is for him. I had some low stretch...

    fish- designed for speed

I like to play with water bottle rockets and I ran across a really good series produced by NASA Here's a webpage that explains a lot about drag. http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K-12/airplane/shaped.html Note the airfoil or "fish shape has le lowest drag coefficient of any of the prismatic...

    Enthusiasm outweighed common sense

I went to Boy Scout camp last week with my troop. The boys had merit bdge classes all day and there wasn't any good training being offered to the adults, so I decided to sign up for BSA Lifeguard training and certification. The first day started with a 30 minute classroom session where the...

A question for the strippers out there...

I never went the bead and cove route. It just seemed lik too much time at the router table to me. when I built several strip built boats I found a lumber yard that sold western red cedar that was S4S (sanded 4 sides) I ripped my strips to 1/4 inch and when I was setting strips in place just...

    Boy Scout build

build on hold Sorry guys, my computer crashed. I've been away from the forum for a few weeks. The Boy Scout build is currently on hold. There are some "political issues" going on that very well may destroy the Troop. We have about 20 registered scouts, but attendance is down to about 8...

    Pre packing for a trip

I keep everything except food and clothes in my backpack. It stays there all the time. When I use a consumable supply like band aids, important papers, or matches from my emergency kit, it gets replaced when I get home before I put the pack away. Tents, tarps, and sleeping bags get cleaned...

    Campfire Chatter ...... Stoves.

Sparkey A buddy of mine carried the older version of the Optimus for 3 months backpacking around Europe. It never let him down. Personally, I'm a big fan of ultra lightweight alcohol stoves. My favorite is a Pepsi can stove that weighs an ounce and will boil a pint of water in about 7...
