I know that a 12' 1x4 pine board weighs 7lbs. So if I plane cypress down to 1/4" strips and use 10" sides and the weight is close to that of pine. I should be able to build a 14' pirogue for under 30lbs? Does that sound right?
Guys I apprciate all the info. All this info is for my 3rd one I'm fixing to start. Still finishing the 2nd flat bottom. The 3rd will be a UJ Piroge. I have found a place I can get 16' rough cut ceder, pine, or cypress. I would like to plane it down to 1/8" or so and build the Piroge out of 2"...
Off this subject, but....can a boat be made water proof without epoxy or varnish. I would like to make a functional antiqe looking boat and have the grain of the wood be the finish and feel. Or at least a flat sheen varnish?
I really jealus now. I don't even have the cleats on yet or the glass and I'm weighing 107lbs. Granted this is a 12' x 48" Jon boat. I could have saved 48lbs using 1/8" Okome.
I am finishing up my second boat. This one I built a little smaller with different needs. I have a question as I am starting to think about my 3rd boat. I had to build this boat out of 1/4" Birch. It was the best wood I could find that was thin. It ended up being 3/16" and weighed 23lbs a sheet...
I finally got the uncle johns john boat on the water yesterday. I wanted to thank everyone for their help with the project. It doesn't seem like it took 4 months to get this far. I still have some detail work to do on the inside and some final paint on the outside but I had no leaks at all (with...
I just figured I would add to this one instead of creating a new post. Do I need to fiberglass a livewell for waterproffness or is that what the epoxy is doing?
Thanks
Ok found answers to most of my questions, can someone confirm a couple things please. Do I need to sand or just wipe down the wetted out glass before applying the full sheet to the bottom?
Thanks
Acually several questions. I tried to find most of them but want to confirm also. I have started the epoxy/fiberglassing the bottom of my boat. I have done one side seam with 3" tape. I epoxied the the seam yesterday about 11am, put my tape on it and wetted it in at 7pm. I epoxied my puzzel...
Guys I have to thank you for all your help. I got 2 of the cross braces in and fixed my problem. I have one 3' from the transom and one 5' from the bow. I will still need to pull the bow over about 1/2" when I do the bottom to square it from the front cross brace to edge but that's it. It looks...
I put some cross braces on the top of the sides and it did pull it in a bit. I didn't swap sides and didn't put braces on the bottom yet. I am going to cut my inner braces tonight and secure the sides and see where I'm at. It looks like I can pull it within about 1in and still look equal on the...
checked the sides and they are the same, plus I had them clamed together when they were cut. It my end up being on my transom. After I switch the sides I'll re-post to let you know where I'm at.
I'll try switching sides tonight. I am using sheet rock screws for now. And I used a dovetail jig to cut and connect the sides together. Other than one side looking slightly better than the other I can use either without any problem.
I just want to correct the problem as quickly as...
jem, you trace the shape so I can't really put a bottom on it till I feel like it's right.
The funny (not really) thing is that if I twist it the transom comes off level on my work table. If I push it square one side is bowed more, where one side has a boat shape and the other just a straight...
I am building an uncle johns jon boat. I have the transom, bow and sides put together. not a bottom yet and no seat braces. I cut the sides at the same time and both are the same length. I measured from the inside bow end in a straight line to the transom and get within a 1/4" measurement. If I...
