    New Pirogue Plans Available

Oh man, I'm liking this boat Matt. Hey, cut it out - it's not getting any easier for me to pick out my next project! Can you please tell me the height of the sides?

A Comfortable Pirogue (Boat) seat ..ya can make

I just purchased these seat plans the other day. I would really like to change them so that the seat can recline all the way back. That way I can quickly lay back in my pirogue to go under trees that have fallen across the rivers. Do any of you have any ideas on how this might be done? I...

    Waterproof compartment suggestions

I'd like some dry/waterproof compartment(s) in my Uncle John's pirogue. I have inner and outer rub rails the full length of the boat with spacers between. I do not want to increase the height of the boat at all or make anything that low limbs can snag. I'll appreciate your suggestions on how...

    Punishment!

Hello all, With a bit of help from my sons and everyone on this forum, I built my pirogue last winter/spring. It's a 16 footer and built out of cheap Home Depot luan plywood, one layer of fiberglass cloth on the inside, one on the outside, and a second layer on the bottom extending from the...

    Inner Rail Attached

Here's a couple of pictures of our first real outing which is the French River in Oxford, Massachusetts. http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s283 ... -07001.jpg http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s283 ... -07008.jpg An hour earlier we had launched on the big lake and gone out for a...

    Inner Rail Attached

Not to worry Jack, I removed all 51 of the clamps this morning, and then weighed her at 42 pounds which isn't bad at 16 feet. Have a look: http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s283 ... -07001.jpg http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s283 ... -07002.jpg I'll post some pics of our outing...

    Inner Rail Attached

By the way, it was hot here in Vermont today. Temps hit 90 degrees. I got a very good lesson on how chemical reactions work faster when warmer. I mixed up a 3 ounce batch of epoxy and it got burning hot in what seemed like 5 minutes. That didn't happen in my 45 degree basement in February...

    Inner Rail Attached

Went out today and bought another 30 clamps, and started in on attaching the inner rails. I just finished. 5 inch spacers cut at a 45 inch angle on each end with 3" gap (consistent spacing courtesy of a 3" paint scraper as a guide). I didn't know what to do next to the middle ribs, until I...

What kind of UV resistant varnish?

Ok, thanks. I was afraid I wasn't going to be able to take it out and use it for 30 days. The season is too short here for that. We get our first hard frost at the end of August! I want to get some mileage out of this and enjoy it.

What kind of UV resistant varnish?

Thanks Chuck. How long should I wait for the epoxy to cure before applying the varnish? I think I recall reading that you have to wait a period of time before varnishing.

What kind of UV resistant varnish?

Can anyone recommend a readily available varnish to go over and protect the epoxy on my pirogue? I still need to finish my inwales, but that's about it, and hoping to finish in a couple of days. Thanks much - VTFogg

    Maiden Voyage

Ok, I glassed the other inside section between the middle ribs and end ribs. This time using separate pieces for the sides and bottom. MUCH easier! CCTyer take my advise - do the outside in one piece for the entire boat using a plastic spreader for the first coat and a roller for subsequent...

    Maiden Voyage

Aaaaaaargh! Glassing the inside is NOT a cake walk. I found that the outside was really quite easy, but the inside is a completely different beast. My first section was a complete piece laid over the sides and bottom between the middle rib and one end rib. The difficulty is trying to...

Mick, by the way I was wondering about that new "picture" under your name. What is that?

    Maiden Voyage

Hi Mick, The boys are really excited about the boat and want me to hurry up and finish it. I'm already DROOLING over building one of Matt's boats, probably the Muskoka or Gander River. My wife is just sighs when I talk about building the next one and says "what are you going to do with all...

    Maiden Voyage

We just couldn't wait! It's not done yet, but it was such a nice day today that I took the boys and the boat to a small pond in our neighborhood. There were quite a few people there fishing, and it took a while to get it launched with all the questions about where we got it. There was a fair...

    Update - Tinted the sides

The boys read your comments and say this is a good excuse for them to get out there and mess up the garage. Gee thanks guys.

    Update - Tinted the sides

I used a short foam roller as suggested to apply the second coat of tinted epoxy to the sides tonight. The foam roller is THE way to go. MUCH easier than using the soft plastic blade to apply a smooth color coat. I still like the plastic blade, but it took me nearly an hour per side to put...

    Update - Tinted the sides

This boat building is addicting! I took the day off today to work on it. I applied a second coat of epoxy to the cloth on the bottom with what started out as a brand new soft plastic spreader. Wow, that glass cloth is abrasive with just one coat on. By the time I was done with the bottom the...
