Camping Sites in Western North Carolina

Hi all,

Bearridge asked me about the camping sites in this area, and I thought I would put them in a new topic(rather than the bean recipes) just in case some of you folks don't like beans! However, I though some of you might want to file the camping site information in case you ever want to come this direction.

In all honesty, since I live in the area, I have never used any of the campgrounds, so I can give you listings, but I can make any recommendation of one over the other.

I asked friends of ours that run Moonshadow Services and lead outtrips, about the camping sites and their recommendation was as follows:

"it depends on if they want to camp (with a camper in a campground )
or camp in a tent in a backcountry site/ campground. Camper/tent
areas in the park at Deep Ck or Smokemont- 4th of July is packed, :(
but they may be able to make reservations on-line. Forest Service
campgrounds at Tsali or Cable Cove on the lake. There's tons of
camper campgrounds around her that are privately owned. If they want
backcountry campsites, there are sites in the park, always crowded
that time of year. We take groups to Slickrock/Joyce Kilmer or
Panthertown in Cashiers anywhere to avoid the crowds. I would say
don't come on the 4th of July unless you like to camp with lots of
people!"

Now, along with that, here are some of the listings I found :

Camping in the National Park can take visitors back to a primitive time, while still offering the amenities that modern life necessitates. A total of ten campgrounds can be found in the park. All of these major camping areas offer cold running water, flush toilets, fire grills and tables. There are no hookups available in the park and most of the sites are closed from the beginning of November until early Spring. Check the listing below for operation schedules. Fees for camping range from $12.00 - $20.00 per night. Spaces at Cades Cove, Elkmont, and Smokemont must be reserved from May 15 thru October 31 through the National Park Reservation Service at 1-800-365-2267. You can make reservations up to five months in advance. The remaining seven campgrounds are first-come, first-served only. Enjoy your outdoor experience in the Smokies and please remember – leave nothing behind but your footprints.

Jean,

My definition of a "modern campground" is one where they dig the hole, but don't put one of those stinky little houses over it. A "primitive campground" has a stinky house on it. No civilized person would endure either that smell or the loss of the view.

Come to the Canadas.
