On a whim I set out for the Ebeneezer today and arrived at Long
Bridge Landing about 2:30 pm. I was planning on taking it easy and
maybe even wetting a hook but when I saw the water was up I had to
try for Old Ebeneezer Site. I was greatly surprised by how open the
channel was as I paddled against the current (a real current). I did
have to duck under a few trees and pull over another. I really only
had to exit the boat twice, once to pull over a tree and the other
to pull around. Birds were few and I only spotted three turtles, no
gators.

Train Trestle up from Long Bridge

As I passed the train trestle I began to get excited as this is the
fartherest I had managed in a few years. I did come to a new concrete
picnic table under a shed just across from the treated waste release
site and guess there is a new subdivision being built as they also
had a firehydrant installed as well. Each obsticle I came to I
questioned if I should turn around but I knew I was getting close.
Sure enough I came to my destination and was glad to see it. I was
getting tired and sore as it is 4 miles upstream and I'm out of shape.

I walked around and took some new pictures of the monuments and even
checked out the one in the field. Two deer spooked as Westbury and I
were coming back in the field, they didn't hang around long. We
headed back downstream and I was glad to have the current with us
instead of against. We had some ducks running lead for us as they
always do, some wood ducks and looked to be maganzers. Squirrels were
about the only plentiful wildlife out and kept Westbury entertained
as we paddled along.

I did try and flyfish a short while but as the sun was getting low
and we still had some water to travel I limited my time catching low
limbs and trees on the bank. No fish for dinner tonight. We arrived
at the landing at 7 pm, thank goodness for daylight savings. We had
plenty of light and loaded the boat and gear, then headed for home.

Reflections on the Black Water

If anyone is wanting to paddle, now is the time to do the Ebeneezer,
especially is you like the upper creek like I do. The day was great
and even though I'm a little sore, me and little dog had a great day
on the water........
