Directions are for "bare" wood.
Glassed wood or wood saturated with epoxy would not be "bare" wood, correct?
Seems to me the first three thined coats of varnish are "build up" and/or saturation coats and may would not be needed over epoxy.
Is it necessary to thin the first coats and how many total coats would be needed if applied over epoxy?

we thin all coats of epifanes, whether going over epoxy or not, epifanes straight out of the can is difficult to work with

we do follow their protocol even when going over epoxy, don't know if it's necessary, but it works for us

when coating over epoxy, you get to a better gloss quicker, but don't forget - you're varnishing to protect the epoxy, now is not the time to be cheap or get in a hurry

besides what's a couple of extra coats amongst friends?

The key to clear finishes for longivity is to completely seal wood drain to achieve a smoothe surface over the wood. This is where either epoxy or many coats of varnish in any manner whether it be thinned or not is important. But when finishing wood clear, you must first make sure that the wood is sanded properly and smoothe completely down to new color and wood. If not all that you do is seal aged wood which does not show the same color or shade. Aged or improperly sanded wood shows greyish or even yellowish under any finish by comparison to freshly sanded woods. Keep in mind too that if you have to strip the wood for whatever reason grainy wood needs to be completely taken down to the aged finished coats of any type so that your new work and finish also looks uniform. For sure finish materials shows darker in wood grain and is to be expected. Make sure you use the proper clearcoat hardener if you use epoxy to build up the finish work to a smoothe surface.
