Lower Cache River Trip

Today was a day to behold...spent the day with Grasshopper and his class canoeing the Lower Cache River. Cypress Swamps..http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/pa ... chervr.htm Looked at and touched the oldest Cy...Estimated to be over 1800 years old!! KAHUNA

Makes your mind wander looking at the old trees and we have one down here that we call the Senator which is reported to be the largest and oldest Cypress in the states.

Close as they can figure it is only 3,500 years old and huge. It's residence is the Big Tree Park over by Longwood.

Just think what it would be like if they would not cut all of them for lumber back in the early years. One tree would make all of the lumber needed for several homes and that is where a lot of them went.

It is nice to look at a tree like that and try to visualize what it use to be like with the swamps full of them.
