Nice trip report Franke......I'm hoping the written report is as truthful as the pictures.

Franke...AKA Buckisland was a gracious host as usual in guiding this trip and supplying equipment. Wonderful Gentleman to paddle with and great friend.

It was so wonderful seeing Franke, Chuckles and Swampy/KT again

It's late and I'm ready for bed....it was a rough day....I swam a portion of the river. We'll see how truthful Buckisland comes in on his official report.

Well...it's Sunday morning and were of to have a camp breakfast at Ft. McAllister with Chuckles and Swampy. Chuck is heading home today. Were spending the day with Swampy and KT, they will head back to NC in the morning. Stories will abound and be stretched when they get on the forum.

Frankes Gaotordog just ain't right.....but neither is Franke....

I'M BACK........... :p

I have to say it was a fun trip , even had the chance to see and camp with some good old friends , Swampy and KT ( WolfyMomma) then get invaded by Oldyaker and his Granddaughter Pat ( Actually his wife and a true saint for being married to him Just like KT being married to Swampy , two real Ladies with a burden to bare )

Then , When Yak was not flagging down the wrong cars coming into camp , ( Folks looked at him like he had a screw loose ,which he does and that way he is so much fun to be with, word spread around the Ft McAllister camp really FAST.... DON'T Drive past site 54.........) Frankie slipped past him but I think the reason for that is Westbury was driving , You know Frankie's Boss and furry 4 legged companion. Ya think I joking , why do you think Frankie does all the paddling when they are together on the water ...DUHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Yep... You guessed it Westbury does everything and Frankie takes the credit for doing it .... Westbury told me he was going to join a union to correct matters , especially since Frankie would not let him have any of the supper or even chase a squirrel.

CASE IN POINT .......
Frankie had a plate ( After he put Westbury in the vehicle) and none of us thought of taking a picture of him with it since it was piled so high it would of required a WIDE angle lens and we did not have one with us. Yep..Sausage , Cold slaw , baked beans , sauteed onions .... Vidalias no less....and a fruit salad.

Nuff said fer now ......... I will post a trip report , with pictures for anyone who has trouble reading the printed word ( BEAR ) , have to make sure he understands what we did , Lawyers

So Yaker was out chasing cars, somebody needs to have a leash when he's out in public ya know. I hope he didn't try to burn another hole in Swampy's sun shade tarp.

Well now OZ....please send money to the SPD for my bail.....I tried to releive myself on a Savannah fire hydrant tonight!

Chuck....I know you was in a hurry to get back today because Mary is coming home.....but I wish you would have stayed until mid afternoon. The girls, Swampy and myself went to Loves for the all ya can eat catfish fry......DANG T WAS GOOOOOOOOOD!!! Ain't enough O's in good! :p
Come to think of it, maybe it was a good thing you wasn't there. It was embarrasing! Swampy was asked to leave because he ate so much catfish that he put the Ogeechee catfish on the endangered species list! :? Had you been there, it would have been put on the extinct list!

Anyway, it was so good to see old friends again. It was worth the trip! I'm so very glad you guys got to meet BuckIsland. Now you know he may be nuts but still a fine fellow! I hope we all can get together again!

Rest well for Marys visit Chuckles....now we should be hearing from Swampy before too long, he's due home in about fifteen minutes. Wonder how he will twist the facts on this trip?

OH! By the by Swampy.......I'll leave you to give the weather report and where it was raining and not raining inrelation to where our newly wired friend was located in relation to the rainy weather!

OHHHH.....Tell KT look under the recipes section on SP Forum....I posted a few recipes for the Savannah Red Rice recipe she wanted to look into....

Friday Part 1 of the Trip Report, my point of view!

Well the weekend was looking good but somehow Friday turned cool and rain came down all day. The forecast was all out of whack as the entire weekend was to be sunny and warm. Oldyaker called early afternoon and announced he was on schedule and would give me a shout when they got settled into the motel. A little while later he rang again and said that Swampy and Chuck were at the campground in Richmond Hill and then it all made sense. The famous Chuckster and his ever present cloud of rain that follows him around had hit town early. Man were we in for it now!

Oldyaker suggested I meet up with him and Pat at the campground and introduce myself and Gator dog, so we headed that way. As we pulled up to site 54 we saw the Yakman flagging down yet another vehicle with a canoe on top, needless to say the locals that dared to put a boat on their car and come anywhere close to Fort McAlister where seriously challenged not to hit the crazy Italian running in front of them waving his arms madly.....

It was indeed a great honor to meet the one and only, Old Sparky, and gaze upon his pirouge and golden mode of transportation. Also I was very pleased to make the acquaintance of Swampy and his very gracious wife KT and not to forget the bride of Oldyaker, Pat. Westbury made his rounds and then proceeded to do what he does best, water the vegetation and wander. After introductions all around Swampy proceeded to cook up some mighty fine Brauts with Vidalia Onions and a good portion of baked beans. What a great meal to have in the middle of the woods with good friends! Watching the three fine gents relive past expeditions made me look foward to sharing new adventures with all of them.

I had to say goodnight early but before I left Sparkey made the decision to not paddle with us on Saturday. It was going to be a long day and just coming off Doctor's order to take it easy he used very wise judgement to wait for another day. I tried to prod him into coming as I had another tandem canoe and would gladly paddle him (propel him in the boat) if he would like to come. He decided to remain in camp with KT who was also on the injured list. I said my goodbyes and left for home, full of food and warm from the great hospitality extended by everyone.

Saturday 17 May on the Ogeechee.

Saturday I awoke to a bright, sunny but cool morning. Knowing Chuck had decided not to paddle I had expected warm but maybe the weather gods hadn't got the full report yet, oh well, sunny was enough for now! The river was at 3.5 feet so I was expecting perfect conditions for lots of breaks and even a swim or two if it warmed up. A quick stop at Krispey Kreme for dougnuts and coffee and my trusted companion and I headed to the meeting place. We arrived right at 9 am and shortly thereafter Trish from St. Marys showed up. I was happy to see her as she wasn't sure if she could come or not. I had already had several cancellation and our crowd of 15 had dwindled down to an expected 9. Next to show was Phil and his wife Karen, locals that I paddle with every once in awhile. Across the river we heard a shout and Bayla hit the water to come across to join the group. She must have had a lot of coffee because she was wired! It's not that I have ever been around her when she was quiet but I think she was out to set a new record for nonstop conversation.

Swampy, Oldyaker and Pat showed up right at 9:30 and after introductions we loaded Bayla's boat onto Trish's SUV and headed to the put in on Hwy 119. The weather was warming nicely. At the put in we unloaded boats while Bayla regaled us and everyone else around with her chatter. When she found out Phil was originally from England she set about making him sorry he left the mother country, but all in fun (I think!) I loaded coolers, weber grill and probably another 50 lbs of gear into my tippy canoe, making sure to strap everything in as I have turned over a few times in this one. I really love the boat, a Sawyer, but it's very narrow and made to go extremely straight. If you're not careful it will dump you out in a heartbeat as well I know. I lent Oldyaker and Pat my Wenonah Solo Plus, a boat I sometimes paddle standing up and cosider a very stable craft, more on that later.

As we paddled down I was pleased to see lots of birds out and knew we were in for a good day of birdwatching and basking in the sun. The water was still a little cool but I was sure it was time for the first swim of the year (intended swim, that is). It wasn't a full 40 minutes into the paddle and I called for the first of many breaks. It's real hard for me to pass a good sandbar without stopping to take advantage of it. Everyone seems to have settled into a good rythem and really seemed happy to be on the water, I know Westbury and I both were! We had already seen several heron, little blues, and a great blue as well as some songbirds. Redshouldered hawks called from back in the woods and woodpecker tapping was heard amidst their cries also. I waded into the water but it was still a little cool for a swim. Back in the boats and that's when Bayla made the mistake of coming too close. Westbury goes from cute to Devil Dog in 0 seconds flat when someone gets next to his boat! From then on it was a contest between the two of them who would aggrevate the other the most. Bayla doing all the instigating! Westbury is very happy to just dig in the sand for roots or to chase sticks and retrieve them from the water as long as he doesn't have to swim for them.

Another break or two and it was time for lunch. We found another great sandbar with lots of room and proceeded to set out a feast. Phil manages a local restuarant and supplied lots of delicious wings, we also had watermelon, cheeses, olives, chips, and the main course, Kielbasa smuggled in from Philly....... What a feast. I think this is the only time I have seen Bayla eat anything normal and it even kept her quiet for a short time. WOW!!! Westbury is not allowed human food (don't tell him he's not human, we are saving that for when he's older) but managed to steal a bun which I had to pry out of his teeth of death. He is fast and really watches close. I did provide him with a feast of his usual dog food and some treats thrown in for trying to terrorize Bayla. Everyone ate until they could eat no more but when you provide for 20 and 8 show, you're bound to have leftovers. Phil and Karen are accomplished birdwaters and name every bird that flew by but I really can't remember them all. Flycatchers, warblers more herons and even a Mississippi Kite. As we were leaving Karen spotted a Dragonfly coming out of its nymph stage and we watched as it unfurled it's wings.

I did go for my first swim and was joined by Phil and Trish. Oldyaker and Swampy must not be much into swimming as they held back and just rubbed their stomachs. We loaded back up and proceeded on down the river. This section does twist and turn a lot with quite a few snags to make it very interesting. We even have a spot where it seems the main river was dammed and where it diverts you have a small set of shoals to give you a very small thrill. There are some sheds and summer homes along the way but they are stretched out enough that it doesn't feel crowded and when the water is down there is very little boat traffic. Today there was quite a bit as the fishing seemed pretty good and with the warm sun out everyone with a boat was out enjoying the weather. Bayla kept up her banter and no one was immune to her chatter, fishermen, people along the shore, everyone was chatted up.

More sandbars, another swim or two, plenty more birds but no snakes or gators on this trip. The turtles were out sunning but are extremely shy as I'm sure they get harrassed alot. An Osprey flew overhead as well as several ducks. I was thinking but never did say we hadn't had anyone flip a boat as I had almost expected to do that very thing. We were careful to point out snags and make sure everyone set up for safe passage around any sweeps in the bends as we came to them. With only a mile to go Oldyaker and Pat were graciously calling out snags to Swampy and as I turned around to check his progress I saw them run into a strainer and flip over. I turned the boat around and proceeded to pick up anything that floated my way. Pat gallantly stayed with the boat and when it hung up on a snag we escorted her to the nearby shore. Oldyaker and I then drug the boat to shore and emptied it out. Nothing was lost and after everyone calmed down we were happy to find no damage to any person and nothing lost. I'm sure we'll get two different reports on how this incident occurred but I have to side with Pat (she's much prettier that Oldyaker)!!!!

We finally made it to the take out at Hwy 80 and joined the rest of our group. They decided we had stopped for another rest and were real sorry they had missed the excitement. Little did I realize the excitement was to come. Bayla lives close by and graciously volunteered to drive us back up to retrieve our vehicles. I have never experienced a more thrilling ride at Six Flags or Disney world than the ride back up with her. Her talking had accelerated by at least 500 percent and she spent more time watching the people in the back of the car than the road. When we noticed woodstorks on the side of the road I thought she was going to run over them (50 yards off the road) until Swampy grabbed the wheel and told her to watch the road not the birds. We overshot the turnoff by just a few yards, with wheels locked but what the heck, we arrived safely and I usually change my shorts on Saturday anyway so what was the harm! Back down to load the boats and say goodbye to everyone. Our shuttle driver had met some new friends at the put in so we didn't get to tell her goodbye but I'm sure we'll see her soon.........

It was a great trip and we really want to thank Chuck for not coming as the weather turned out great (just kidding) . Thanks to Oldyaker and Pat for the great Kielbasa and everyone for the company. Me and Westbury are always glad to show off our river. Driving home he was worn slap out and just layed there, a tired and happy dog! Until next time!

KT and I got in last night. Would have been in earlier but Yak and Pat insisted that we eat lunch with them after touring Fort McAllister. I do have to say that Sunday morning it was doubtful that I could prepare breakfast with the rain clouds over us. Even small drips came down every now and then. Chuck ( the rain Master) yelled "I'm outta here!" and took off in his Jeep and Motel 6 rig. I kid you not.... within 3 minutes, the skies were cloudless! No kidding ... but then the "Rain Master" had left the area ... go figger...

The trip: What a nice one! Met some wonderful people that all here should meet one day. Even Baylar .... The weather was nice... in the put in by 10 am. Great feelings about this already. Frank has given a most great report already, I only wish to tell a few lies .. opps! er... the "truth" of several matters that others may want to read about. And, for historical folks who wish to know the rest of the story" so to say...

This trip was done in Geezer mode all the way! For you younger ones, that is paddle, paddle, break , break, paddle ... you get the picture. For the Olympic paddler this was fatefully boring and will not keep ya in a good mood... but for Old Geezers ( some were very young people who enjoy the leisure paddle) this was tops. It gave time to see what was around us as the river went its lazy way around sand bars, and sweepers. I judged this river and that section of it we paddled, much like a "slower" Saint Mary's River. Only about three times did the trees fall out into the river and joined other trees so that there was a tight fitting of the crafts between them. ( and for Yak and I who , shall we say, need the extra berth to get through  )

I paddled an Old Towne "Still water" which is a recreational canoe. Flat bottom with a 1" keel. I left home with the thought that my bride was to help paddle and that she was comfortable with Old Towne. But her "broken" rib suffered several days before the trip and the learned fact that this was going to be a 13 mile section caused her to decline the torture. Since the High Sheriff was also staying in camp because of concerns of higher water levels on the river after the rains, I thought her in good hands if not the driest around ( the Rainman remember?) .

This made swampy pucker on the straight places where the current was lost in the wide sections. It was a hump to keep up such beautiful crafts ahead of me. In one section, Yak and I traded canoes, and Frank offered me his 2OZ. hand made paddle. What a privilege and workmanship! He made it a bent shape... and it proved to handle as well as it looked. Long story but I didn't have my wooden paddle with me either..

The Wenonna Solo was sweet handling, but I knew that I would need a lot more experience in paddling it and would have problems ahead if some of the more tight twists and strainers showed up. I need to work on balance where the Old Towne was a bathtub filled with forgiveness in maneuvering. So Yak and I traded back. I had my canoe and he was back with his bride ( I can say now that Pat does most the paddling and has to stop every now and then to listen if she hears her hubby's paddle striking water) :p
He in his craft and me in mine... I am behind paddling like mad.. I hear a "Paddl.e mumpgh yer hep!" ... wonder what that was about.. OH! there's a strainer there .. I need to go left .. and watch out for that next strainer in the middle .. have to stay on the left and cut back to avoid all this... After making that run I look up and see a white bottomed Solo!!! Pat is hanging onto the craft and Yak is playing in the water... Some back ground here... Jimmy loves to turn his boat over ...no matter what the temp is or the depth. I can not for the life of me understand it... but the lad does enjoy a stream's bath but in such awkward places...< sigh> Pat came out wet and unhurt. Yak was his poised self after he dumped his gear into my canoe and Frank walked out to the scene. They pushed the canoe to shore to turn it over and dump the water... But Yak's watch was still on!!! ( another story about this)

The river has many wild looking sections in this paddle. Beautiful looking plants and animals both flying and slithering. I saw only one snake on the river and he or she was soooo small ... Few homes and fish camps interrupt the passage along the river. I give it a hearty "A" for the scenery and new found friends. Off the river by 6 pm... and that made it sweeter yet...
Gas prices prohibit this trip every week end ( for me anyways) else, I'd be back there this weekend coming up!

I did forget the profusion ( that means alot, learned that from a lawyer friend, did I say friend?) of wild spider lilies that grew everywhere along the banks and the water lilies. Willows abound along the shore and with them in full foilage it makes for a very beautiful paddle (if I might let my feminine side take over for a few minutes).

Chuck, funny you should mention Westbury driving. He did pass his CDL a while back for over the road trucking but that didn't last long. See Below

Thanks for the kind words Swampy and come back soon and often. We may be camping on that section this weekend! Without Bayla!

I told you he should of had a piece of oldyakers delicious sausage but .... NO ..... you would not do it and you ate it right in full sight of his gaze while he was imprisoned in the vehicle........

The true secret - and this is the unalloyed truth - to having a good trip is to assemble ONLY good people. With good folks, they'll make sure that everything works well. With bad folks, they'll make sure that nothing works well.

I wish I could make it simpler than that, but I can't.

Before I departed Savannah yesterday morning....I loaded up the cooler with some Georgia Wild Scrimps, I put a few on a plate to give you an idea...

I kept a few out before placing them in the deep freeze and asked Mizzus Yak
she wanted them prepared.....she said shrimp 'N' grits would be fine. So I made them up and damn! Jarvis is mov'n in his clothes and belongings into the spare room! Mizzus Yak thought they was special too....
