Swampy sent this out to a bunch of the guys so if you have read it , a reminder is always good.

Heart Attack & Water.....

Something I didn't know either! I asked my Doctor why do I and other people urinate so much at night time. Answer from my Cardiac Doctor = Gravity holds water in the lower part of your body when you are upright (legs swell). When you lie down and the lower body (legs and etc) seeks level with the kidneys it is then that the kidneys remove the water because it is easier. This then ties in with the last statement!

I knew you need your minimum water to help flush the toxins out of your body, but this was news to me.

Correct time to drink water... Very Important. From A Cardiac Specialist!
Drinking water at a certain time maximizes its effectiveness on the body:

2 glasses of water after waking up - helps activate internal organs

1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal - helps digestion

1 glass of water before taking a bath - helps lower blood pressure

1 glass of water before going to bed - avoids stroke or heart attack

Please pass this to the people you care about......

I can also add to this... My Physician told me that water at bed time will also help prevent night time leg cramps. Your leg muscles are seeking hydration when they cramp and wake you up with a Charlie Horse.

I would like to add that this summer when it is really warm to HOT outside you should stay hydrated , especially heart patients. You do not want to become dehydrated because then the blood thickens and the heart has to work harder to pump it .

None ofthe heart Drs. I've been to have never entioned anything about that. But then again, they are good about not telling you things like diuretics causes loss of potassium which can affect the muscles and memory so start taking in extra potassium to counteract that. Things like that. I do appreciate knowing about the water. Thanks to Chuck and Swampy.

My heart doc is always telling me to drink water and to NOT become dehydrated and that was before he has me on two diuretics because my potassium level was high. That increase is caused from the blood pressure meds he has me taking , so I take a couple of pills to lower the blood pressure then another two to lower the potassium the others cause an increase in.

I keep wondering how much stock he has in those pharmaceutical companies.

A few years ago when I had the heart attack ( that was a few years after those cardiac arrests ) and in the ER the folks gave me two pills that would of choked a horse to get the potassium level up. Not they want me to take some to lower that level. Talk about confusion :? :?

They recommend up to 8oz every 25 minutes! That's a quqrt an hour. If I were padlling Lake Havasu that would be OK. Anywhere else, it's about 8-10 times overkill.

I've never heard of anyone dying from drinking too much water. Isn't that kind of a self-limiting activity? Kind of like, it's difficult to commit suicide by jumping straight up too far.

Paddling the Everglades they recommend No Less then One Gallon per day , per person. I found that to be a good measure for any paddling trip , especially in the Summer.
When Vince and I did that 12 day Glades run we had 14 gallons per-person and returning to Everglades city each of us had just about a gallon left over. We started the day after Memorial Day , last week of May and the 1st week of June. All that time we only meet two other paddlers. 12 days of rain with about 2 hours of sun for one day , the rain was a blessing. :D

Or make sure you have a good water filter with you and refurbish your water as you paddle along. Providing you are padding in fresh water.

HOW could I have gotten so forgetful??!! Must have been from sipping some single malt?

Back to the paddler who died. it seems that, once s/he drank too much water, s/he could have been saved with mere a teaspoon of table salt? Helluva thing to die for.

Taken off the web............Plus Last months Backpacker had a article on this very thing about drinking to much water so it throws off your electrolyte balance. The cure is quite simple.

It is dangerous to drink too much pure water. Water intoxication or "water poisoning" occurs when people drink so much water that the body loses the balance of electrolytes. The body needs a certain amount of sodium and calcium in the bloodstream for proper operation of the brain and muscles.
If you dilute the blood too much, the brain and muscles can fail, resulting in coma or heart attack and death. Several people have died from water-drinking contests.
Normally this is very difficult to do: an adult usually has to drink 1-2 gallons of pure water for symptoms to occur. But children and especially infants are more susceptible due to their smaller bodies.

Water poisoning is easy to prevent: simply eat or drink something with good electrolyte balance, like a banana and a sip of a sports drink. Water poisoning can also happen to people doing extreme exercise or taking drugs (whether legal medications or illegal drugs like ecstasy) which make them very active or thirsty, if they drink only water with no electrolytes.

Myself I will have the water but over a time period ( constantly sipping it ) if I'm really thirsty then it is a bottle of Gator Aid. There are a lot of energy bars that are high in Potassium and you can snack on them.

From all appearances, it's an imbalance of electrolytes. They can be rebalanced. Some conditions, once they have passed a certain point, require more than what it would appear to correct. This may, or may not, be one lf them.
