Hey chuck you always said this was your kind of camping weather. LOl

Believe it or not. I have actually been camping when a Hurricane came to visit.
Back in the early 60's ( Juniors in High School ) Donn and I were on a camping and fishing trip. Dad took us to the St Johns River , dropped in a 12 aluminum boat with a 3 HP Evenrude Fisherman kicker. Spent a couple of days poking around and found a really nice spot to camp on. Put up a two person A Frame tent and called it home. The sky's darkened and figured we were in for a rainy day. Pulled the boat up , turned it over and settled in.
Two days later things cleared up , the wind and rain stopped. As luck would have it , it was the same day Dad was going to pick us up at the boat landing.

It wasn't very long after we got to the boat ramp when dad showed up. He asked how we liked the weather and we told him about the rains and winds. He said it was a cat 1 hurricane we had. He and a friend came out before the storm arrived and went up and down the river looking for us but could not find us. He figured we would of settled in a place to ride the storm out.

I told him we camped on a little sheltered palm tree island on the Econ just a short distance from the river. Dad wanted to know if we had any problems and both Donn and I said .... We ran out of Cold Coke A Colas but had plenty of food left. The woods and water furnished a lot of good meals so we left the rest for later.

Later in life a buddy and I had a storm hit us in the Everglades and I had one more visit me when camping in the Smokes.
Makes all of the rest of the camping trips seam a little boring. ;). OOOp's except for the Brazos River when the Tornado flatten my tent and made me cut my way out of it.
Here is Ron's report on that trip.... https://www.southernpaddler.com/community/threads/brazos-river-trip-the-wildlife.6244/

Seen this in Utube.... I never had the stones to do this, especially with my high dollar Canuck tarp I bought many years ago thanks to Southern Paddler. Lit my stove, but not a fire. I’ve spent a lot of lira listening to Southern Paddler over many years!

Reminds me of a Edisto River trip report back in April 12 of 2006. Some adventurous campers on a paddling trip. Fixing a evening meal by heating up home made meat balls to have with spaghetti that was cooked in a coffee pot. During a rain under some old leaky tarps that almost got burned. Apparently it was considered a normal trip for them even with that Copperhead snake by the cooking area. . ;)

A few observations. I built a cheap windshield of scrap, 1/8" plywood and duct tape. Three pieces about 9" tall, 5" wide on the bottom, and about 4" wide on top. Lay the plywood pieces side by side, about 1/4" apart, narrow ends on top, wide ends on the bottom. Tape the pieces together. It will fold for stowage, when it stands up, it leans in toward the fire or stove a bit.

I'd feel a bit more confident of not damaging an overhead tarp, if the wood fire was in a little stove. I like the Littlbug stove a lot. Www.littlebug.com. I like the Jr. Stove best; others like the larger one.

I'd feel most comfirtable if the fire was in a campstove fired by gasoline. More controllable than a wood fure.

Lastly, I'd have the tarp sloping so that the heated air wasn't trapped, but was easily escaping.

Oldyaker......
Thought you might get a kick out of it.
I can still taste those Homemade Sausage & Biscuits the gal at that corner store made each morning. You had to get there early or you were out of luck.

Jack.....
I recently got a Firebox Nano Gen 2 in Titanium and I would feel really safe using it under a tarp. I got the stove , the X Case for it , the soft side case and the Flame Guard and a Carbon Felt wind screen. It's great when folks run specials on their products.
The X case is for storage and when you open it it becomes the base to set the stove on. The flame guard is a flame protector for any pots handles when it's on the stove. Just rest a part of the pot on the flame guard , this way it doubles as a additional pot support. The Carbon felt windscreen is a better hot pot handler or a safe place to set a hot pot. It also make a great rattle free area in the X Case when the stove is sandwiched in it inside the X case.

Titanium. The Titanium cools down a lot faster then the Stainless Steel.

Stainless Steel. I've had one of these for years and it does take quite a while to cool down. I liked it enough to go ahead and get the Titanium.

The complete kit fits inside a Maxi Titanium Canteen cup and there is room for matches and seasonings.
