    Paddling in New Mexico

No, unfortunately I have not tried it yet. I sure could have used it yesterday, the road was closed that went down to my favorite cove that I usually launch from and I refuse to pay the $3 boat launch fee just to park in a the boat launch parking lot, so I had to portage the canoe for a few...

    Paddling in New Mexico

Piper here is the scoop on my canoe: http://www.neilbank.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2554&highlight= The phone takes ok pictures, but the real digital camera takes WAY better pictures. On the other hand Jack has a point, it is a rotary dial camera so making a long distance call with a lot...

    Paddling in New Mexico

Today was an unseasonably warm and quiet day for Fall in New Mexico. I was trying to figure how to put off doing the long list of chores that I have to do, I decided to go canoeing, that was easy ;-) Cochiti Lake is located within the boundaries of the Pueblo de Cochiti Indian Reservation...

    OK, JEM......

Matt, could you shed a little more light on the "plywood tends to bend easier in one direction and not the other"? I am not exactly sure what you mean, or maybe the cheap plywood that I have used so far doesn't behave like this. Thanks

    OK, JEM......

Sorry I didn't reply to this post earlier, I have been pretty busy, this darn work stuff is getting in the way of playing :D Matt, the way that you have the brace in the picture is exactly how I was thinking it would go together. I don't think it would really get in the way. I read Jack's reply...

building my first kayak - any advice?

I am just curious, why the 10' limitation? Is it a storage, transportation or finished weight issue? How much total weight will be in the boat when you are paddling? Keep in mind that the shorter the boat is, the less efficient (slower) it will be and it won't track as nicely as something with...

    OK, JEM......

Jack, I had to chuckle at your last post. It sounded all too familiar to me. Just the other day my lunch fell of the back seat of my motorcycle on the way to work. I was slowing down and immediately recognized my blue lunch bag sliding down the busy street past me :( but on the up side there...

WOW!!! That is EXACTLY what I wanted too. That thing is absolutely perfect. How soon before the plans are ready? Not that I can start any time soon anyway, just anxious to see em'.

Hey Jack, is that the model that has hook and lure storage by hooking them on the edge of the wood? ;-) The rod & reel that I use the most is a small telescoping rod and spinning reel that I bought at KMart about 20 years ago for $20. I grab it and a small tackle box that has the bare...

    OK, JEM......

I grew up in Madison, WI, thats where I first canoed with my Dad. I was recently back there and got a chance to paddle around some of the areas that I did when I was a kid. Madison is built in and around 4 major lakes Mendota, Monona, Waubesa and Kegonsa. These 4 lakes are all connected by the...

Matt, I think that looks GREAT! I like the lines of it, I like the length, width, height. I was thinking that the 5 major panels could be cut from 2 sheets of plywood and the rest could be done from some scrap pieces, maybe that is just a pipe dream, or I was thinking again, smell the smoke...

Thanks for those pics, I think they helped a lot. I like the curved deck instead of 2 seperate pieces. Maybe we can keep Matt busy for a week or two coming up with another set of plans for us plywood boat junkies;-)

The cockpit shape that I am thinking of is the shape of the Sundance (too big) or the Chesapeake LT16 (too small). They are both pretty much the same shape and when I look around at other kayaks they all seem to have a similiar type of shape.

Based on those numbers I would be comfortable in the 20" width and maybe a 46" or 48" length. I will wait and see what islandpiper says. Is there any way to make the shape of the opening the more conventional shape? Not that it will ever get rolled, I just like the shape better. Thanks for...

    OK, JEM......

I can't speak for islandpiper, but I would like to have my knees covered. I would install footrests in it and use my knees against the underside of the top deck for stability and control. The Chesapeake LT16 that I sat in made me nervous. First of all it was awfully narrow, which I thought I...
