    1/8 ply stem mods

Piper, I'm aware that fiberglass won't handle sharp edges. I would think of adding a piece of "accent wood" along the along the stem and stern. Perhaps glassing each side separately and using a shaping resin fill to finish off the pointy ends of the hull. Maybe no need for a "hard edge" but a...

    1/8 ply stem mods

I'm currently working on my UJ kit and have a specific question for those that may have run up on this situation before me. I'm using 1/8 ply for the sides and 1/4 for the bottom. The stem pieces in the UJ kit are cut to accept 1/4 inch sides. Should I trim them down to the 1/8 depth to match my...

I kinda jumped threads and found myself at the same point as 'flippen your sides'. My flip came out just fine with a few wrinkles from the plastic top sheet. Thanks for the tool hint, (other thread)! Continuing on with the smile on my face. Kids helped me move the sides this morning, nothin like...

    flippin yer sides

flippen yer sides I glassed the first side of my butt joints on the sides last night. Flipped em this morning, all well. The plastic sheet on top created quite a batch of wrinkles, however. I think I'll have to sand the 'texture' before applying final glass.

I got the first side of my butt joint on the sides tonight! I tacked the sections in place, soaked the raw wood, then put a piece of 10 by 10 inch glass over the joint. I used 2.5 oz. super tight weave, (looks like silk cloth). Plastic under and over, a board, then a cement block. Morning will...

This afternoon/evening I got into the shop for the tablesaw work. I cut the sides from a single sheet, (1/8 cedar ply). I was able to find repeating patterns and worked around them so they will butt up to each other lengthwise. I was pleased to end up with both sides having nice matches in the...

Some time ago I was paddling Fiberglass kayaks and we had a vent that had to be opened every time we put into the water , since the change in temp would cause the compartment to contract. Imagine the same would hold for a wood boat. I'll keep your tips in mind when I get to that stage of the...

I like the idea of the hatch openings, I've seen 'em on some others on the site. My foam will go just under the deck for added support and to help carry a rounded top profile. There will be an open area beneath and I'm debating whether or not to seal up the compartment or leave open access. My...

I've been lurking around the site for awhile now, and finally decided to get out of the lazyboy and into the shop! I got the UJ kit and some 1/8 cedar ply to start. I'm going to put a 1/4 bottom on my build. Figuring on a 1/4 by 3/4 strip at the side bottom to make a more solid glue point and...
