    Bayou Dorcheat Pirogue # 2

Thanks. I'm anxious to finish it but it will be a few days before I can even start.

    I Like This Boat Because....................

Post a picture of a boat or boats you like and tell us why and what you like about it/them. Can be one you built or not. I'll start. This may be my all time favorite build. I liked it's somewhat traditional design and I even liked the outside chine logs. The second picture probably...

    "Short Stuff" pirogue

Hope I didn't come across as sounding critical or finding fault. I know the design features you made are right for you. Since your boat has little or no rocker I just wondered how it might work with more load.

    Bayou Dorcheat Pirogue # 2

I'm pleased I was able to correct the "warped" tumblehome panel. Probably would have went unnoticed by most folks but it bothered me. The overall shape is enough different from my other boats that it looks a little "canoeish" to me, but the more I look the better I like it. I don't have the...

    "Short Stuff" pirogue

My sides plus the tumblehome panels are usually 2" to 2.5" taller so I would have 5" or so of freeboard. Do you think the added weight sinking the boat more would make the boat harder to turn?

    "Short Stuff" pirogue

What would you think would happen if you added 100 lbs. or so to the payload?

    Bayou Dorcheat Pirogue # 2

It is a boat now (will float) but there is more work. It needs batter boards installed and then finishing.

    Bayou Dorcheat Pirogue # 2

The tumblehome panel is angled 98 deg. off the sides at midship (at the braces). That angle is determined by what depth/height you need the panel to reach and how wide the cockpit is. The twisting occurs because the sides become more vertical at the ends. They are also rising as the sides get...

    "Short Stuff" pirogue

I am glad the design is working well for you. What "best" materials would you use for the "top notch" build?

    Bayou Dorcheat Pirogue # 2

After installing the plywood tumblehome panels they had warped(dipped) between the stems and supports due to the twisting. Not sure if these pictures show it well enough. I raised them up and then installed the combing. After removing the temporary supports the combing straightened the...

    Bayou Dorcheat Pirogue # 2

This was not my first build using forms and pre cut sides. It did go better than the other time. It is probably easier than the "from the bottom up" way I usually do. Not sure it is as accurate. I missed my desired rocker by about 1/2" at the bow. I checked before fastening the floor but...

    Curved Stem

We have discussed in the past how much the different designs evolved based on the materials available to the builders. Apparently it controls a lot of little features also, like stem shape. Round bodied canoes have rounded over stems, Straight paneled pirogues have straight angled stems...

    Bayou Dorcheat Pirogue # 2

After attaching the bottom I attempted to make the tumblehome with a straight edge instead of following the curved lines of the sides. The traditional pirogues (ones that have tumblehome sides) that I have seen are straight and do not run all the way to the stems. I did not have suitable...

    Bayou Dorcheat Pirogue # 2

Started another pirogue recently. I made a 1/2 scale model based on the dimensons of my last boat and some changes I wanted. After tweeking the model to the shape and dimensons I needed, I used those figures to cut out the sides and make two jigs. Placed the sides around the jigs and adjusted...

    Curved Stem

Chuck, I didn't curve it like a canoe stem because I never considered it. The whole proses has been to increase the water line in relationship to the overall boat length. These stems are a few degrees more vertical than the last boat. We had no issues with it and this not a drastic change...

    Curved Stem

I belive Joey's last two boats have had curved stems. He has joined the side panels together with fiberglass and epoxy to reduce weight and the extra work needed to make wood ones. Most times I have built mine using a generous amount of wood, mainly because I like the stem pieces to fit flush...

    Varnish?

Very bright, nice finish. No doubting that the boat is wooden.

    "Short Stuff" pirogue

I missed this last post and have been wondering if you had made the repairs. Now you "have to go to know" if it is strong enough.

    "Short Stuff" pirogue

Is the floor "rib"/brace 8' from the bow? Where did you sit in relation to it?

    SS&G No Plans Again!

It looks very nice and should generate lots of attention. Do you have any information about the raffle? I don't need another boat, but if somebody over Minden way would win it I might bet to see it on the water.
