A UJ for a Big Boy

Sorry Boss. Woodman get's on the other forum. It's Jeff the owner of Kudzu Craft. I had mentioned several times coating my frames for a sof kayak build with RAKA epoxy and some of the guys said it was over kill that they just throughly coat their frames with teak or some type of oil. Again I...

A UJ for a Big Boy

I was going to hit it this weekend but with the big cool down today it looks like I'll just be yaking! My friend Capt Dan is coming over and were going to do a slow float on the Ouchita River below Carpenter Dam. I have been unable to find a source for the Baltic Birch so I bought two 4X8...

    Wood Duck in progress

Tri-M is for Modern Music Masters! I think it was started in Mass in about 1935. It is for kids who are outstanding musicians who also have high marks in acedemics. My kiddo plays trumbone.

    Wood Duck in progress

My youngest (15) was inducted into the Tri-M Society last night so we know what it means to not get a lot of paddle time together. I have promised her a SOF Kayak for her birthday. I am thinking 15' in length and between 24 and 28 inchs wide. She loves paddeling my Dagger which is a 28" so I am...

WOW! Thanks!!! A friend of mine introduced me to Yostwerks about 3 months ago and got me started down this road of boat building. He and I will both be able to make good use of this info. On the Arkansas Canoe Club website he is Captain Dan. He has a stitch and glue on his to do list and this...

A UJ for a Big Boy

Lake Ouchita has almost 1000 miles of shorline counting the islands. I think I will be keeping my little pirogue near to shore and within 1/2 a mile or so of my launch point just incase I have to walk back. I have been on this lake before with 5+ foot waves during a storm and thankfully I was in...

Hot Springs area. I live about 10 minutes from Remel Dam on Lake Catherine in a small community called Magent Cove. Jeffs book has the plans for the Poco Barta which is 17' X 23". Which I'm leaning strongly toward. I like that fantail design working as a rudder. I still have not ordered my...

Loving the boat. Got the book. Jeff must have shipped it the morning I ordered because it only took 4 days. How are you liking Jeffs Polyester??? I'm just not convinced yet that it will be strong enough and have enough puncture resistance. But I sure love the Idea of being able to use Minwax...

    The grandsons kayak

Questions Questions Questions Is the skin on the upper stapled to the gunnells then coverd with a rub rail and is there a 3/4 or so gunnel strip hiding under that skin to attach things to? Are the rub rails hardwood and are those fastners stainless?

    My Next Project

Loved the Yak and the SOF Canoe or was that a Pirogue. I am guessing you are a teacher. I am starting to lean more toward a 26" beam for stability on my SOF Yak. The UJ that I'm working on will be about 30" at the water line. Thanks Woodman!

    My Next Project

I am in the process of building the 15'6" X 26" X 12 UJ pirogue for fishing. The kayak would be for paddeling pleasure and maybe photo ops baisically just to spend time on the water in solitude and possibly some fishing or just transport to an area to bank fish. My Dagger is 28" wide and just...

Cutting the Scarf Joint on a round shaft

Jack a close paddeling friend of mine has one of those. I will definately try it out but I sure do like the beauty of wood. And to boot he is always worried about scratching that $400 kevlar. With wood I can just sand the sucker down and refinish it. But who knows I might like it enough to spend...

Cutting the Scarf Joint on a round shaft

Thinking of doing just that with two of mine. For reinforcement I contemplated wraping braided nylon fishing line (Trot Line) around the finished joint + some for a length of about 24" then brush epoxy over that. And now that I've read the above post I think I will sand down the blades and add...

    My Next Project

Just to clarify. My actual concern on this boat is how wide should I build it to make it sufficently bouyent for my weight + a little gear. I am thinking a beam of 24". Do any of you have a preferance between Yost or Kudzu styled boats???

A UJ for a Big Boy

Thanks guys! The three scarf joints remark came from Uncle Johns modified plans to place a 3/8ths bottom on his boat under FAQ. Where his standard plan calls for a 10" side. I thought the extra 1.5" to 2" I could squeez out of that method might be helpful. As far as a chined bottom I may also...

    Lake Ouchita in the fall

This lake is 45 minutes from my home and is a wonderful place to just paddle and relax. We have almost 1000 miles of shoreline on this 30ish mile long lake in West Central Arkansas. We have guided Bald Eagle tours from the State Park in the fall and winter and there are numerous campgrounds and...
