    Cracked at the Gunnels

Thanks, JEM. I need to order a few more supplies anyway. Is 5 lbs enough for a 14 ft jon boat?

    Cracked at the Gunnels

How do you keep the epoxy solution from running everywhere. Maybe I didn't have it thick enough? It had the consistency of pancake mix.

    Cracked at the Gunnels

Yeah this is the super fine power stuff. I use it in my garden all the time and thought it would be fine.

    Cracked at the Gunnels

Yeah, that's about all this hull is going to be good for.

    Cracked at the Gunnels

Well, I have plenty of materials. I may just start all over. I haven't put the bottom or anything.

    Cracked at the Gunnels

Okay I finally have made some headway into this boat, but ran into a major problem. I went out this morning and the scarf joint completely failed on the starboard gunnel. What to do now? I scarfed this with epoxy/powdered limestone. Was it the limestone mixture, or was it that too much stuff...

    Raised Beds

Yeah, I've had good luck with raised beds as well. Now I have raised beds and mounded beds for my corn, beans and squash. I'd like to add some keyhole gardens, herbal spirals and a small orchard with fertilizing trees, and fruit and nut trees. Yeah, it's insane how much water these things can...

    Jon boat build

Well, I'd like to fish below the dam for strippers and cats. When that water starts churning, man you'd better have enough ponies to get out of dodge, and boat that can take the waves, not that I'll be that close up, but still. Plus, I want a boat that no one else is using around these parts.

    Jon boat build

Update. Gosh it's been a year since I started this. So, here's what I decided to do. I scraped the jon boat plan and decided to build a power dory instead. I decided to go with the Carolina Dory by Jeff Spira. I've built the strong back and plan to get started on the support ribs this weekend...

Cutting bevels with a skil saw

Come to think of it, dad had a several old planes. I remember them being rusted and in need of repair, but this article may be just the thing to help me get them back in shape. Thanks!

Cutting bevels with a skil saw

So, like a hand plane? I've never use one before. Exactly what type of plane would I need?

Cutting bevels with a skil saw

Yes, to all three. The boat is hard chined. The chine logs must be beveled to 19 degrees, transom to 15 degrees, stem and bow sides to eight degrees.

Cutting bevels with a skil saw

I'm building a hard chinned boat. Do you have any advice for cutting bevels with a Skil saw only? Maybe a jig of some kind?

    Matching sides

What do you guys do to insure that the sides or other panels match exactly? It seems no matter how carefully I cut something. They never match up.

    Epoxy/glass first, cut later?

Well, this boat is going to be a hard chined boat, e.g., a box boat, jon boat. I'd like to put the hard chine on the exterior, but I see your point about doing twice as much work for half the effectiveness.

    Epoxy/glass first, cut later?

Would you explain? I don't quite follow.

    Epoxy/glass first, cut later?

I was thinking wouldn't it be easier to glass and epoxy the plywood first then cut afterward? That way everything has epoxy and fiberglass on it.

    Inside glass

Why not just glass the entire sheet of plywood or pieces before nailing everything together?

    Clear lumber for gunnels?

Yeah, this leads me to ask can you laminate 5.2 mm Lauan plywood to serve as gunnels?
