    Boat & Motor build.

kayak Jack, most weed whackers have a throttle control. But I bet when your trolling motor was replaced with yourself, there were times that the "quiet hum" of the motor was missed. And it did have an off position!

    Do I need a pirogue?

I have two of the Uncle John's piros--they are great little boats, easy to build, stable and handle smallish water good. I also have a short (12' stretched to 13") Swampgirl. It has decks added to achieve a 6' long cockpit. I should say I HAD a swampgirl-my wife and 10 year old granddaughter...

    New Pirouge Build

Sometimes a board will get "wavey" when you start ripping and it releases tension in the board. One guy on Iowa paddlers forum had some pictures of a circular saw (Skil saw) with an 18" long angle attached to the shoe, or bottom plate, as a rip guide. Said it allowed hin to make uniform...

    Uncle John Pirogue

Congrats on this!! There's nothing like paddling a creation of your own--6 hours paddling is only a teaser. Enjoy your work, and when someone asks "I built this!" Have fun, remember the open side goes up, and catch some fish!!

    New with lots of ????

Can't offer a lot on scarfing, except that I didn't make it work for me. The fact that I had cheap luan ply with the wallpaper thick face veneer didn't help. I ended up doing a butt joint, reinforced with a fiberglass splice on each side. The joint is obvious, but watertite and strong. On my...

    New with lots of ????

I think you're trying to make it too complicated! I have two UJ's, one a three rib "standard" and the other a Four rib version. Both were made with 2 sheets of ply, per the instructions. On the four rib version, both of the center ribs are identical--the difference is there is no rib in the...

Gary Sinise and his uncle Jack

Bob, Thanks so much for this connection. My dad was a B-17 mechanic in N. Africa, and Italy during the war. We have a few pictures, and all of his V-mails home during his entire service, but this was so emotional for me. Dad has gone on now, but I'm sure he was looking over my shoulder as I...

New to forum- building a wide jon boat

I think my first look would be to Uncle John-I know he has a plan for a jon boat that may give you some pointers. Hope this helps

    Tipi

Are you really sure you want to be sleeping under those lightning rods? Seems to me that there can be storms along that river, from what I've read. Haste to have fried rat on the sand bar!!

    Ugly Drum Smoker

in reference to fruit and/or nut trees for smoking, cross walnut off the list. It seemed to leave bitter taste-not good! Threw out the meat and coals!!

    What Works / What Don't

The laker is basically Matt's (JEM) free plan, but I cut 1-1/4" off each point onthe ends. That left the boat to be 12' 10-1/2" overall. Her, if the boat has no sail, or motor (even electric), it doesn't have to be registered if it is 13' or less in lenght. I didn't want to get into a p---ing...

    What Works / What Don't

Boat weight- another open ended question. I have a 3 rib UJ piro- it weighs 48 lbs. Made of the 5.2 mm luan, with 4 oz, tight weave cloth, inside and out. I have a 4 rib UJ piro - it weighs 45 lbs. made from the same stuff, with a bit lighter gunnels and inwales. Both are 15' 8" long, glassed...

    "fiberglass over Styrofoam"

Back in about 78 or 79, I bought a used "Sunfish" sailboat that was styrofoam covered with ABS plastic. It had a molded centerboard well. a piece of ply on the transom for the tiller and a piece up front for a bow cleat. It saw a lot of use for several years, then went to shed. Later, I...

    Solar Ovens?

How about some of the foilfaced insulation board used in housing construction? Smooth, lite weight, halfway rigid--it might work.

    Grandson's Boat

A fine looking craft-and a great payment to PawPaw. Sometimes it just can't grt any better than this. Hope you both have a ball with this-its a lot more than just a boat! Well done PawPaw.

    Glassing before construction?

Time to enter my $.o2 worth- or less. The first UJ I made, I did exactly that-Glassed all the inside surfaces before I assembled it. Then I had to go back and tape the seams after the fillets and some sanding, then more sanding the edges of the tape, befor filling in the weave on the inside...

    3 or 4 Ribs

Bee, If I were to build another UJ, I'd do the four rib. Its a little more stable as far as side-to-side, and not any harder to paddle. Like I said, I usually end up with the extra "stuff" and it does have a bit more room. I belive there was 3" differenc in the bottom width. Euther one is a...

    3 or 4 Ribs

I have both of the UJ's- both are 15'8" long. There may be a slight difference in the stability, but the added 3" beam doesn't seem to affect paddling. My wife uses the 3 rib, but I usually end up with more stuff, so I get the 4 rib version. Ron
