Kayak Jack, the blades are smooth, you need to adjust the resolution on your monitor/computer a bit. I think that when the FISHING FORUM squeezes images down the resolution changes a bit too.

Two coats of thinned varnish now, and I'll put on 2-3 regular coats and call it good. I man work a couple of Turk's Heads out near the blades to catch those drips before they carry any extra Louisiana Bayou parasites into the boat.

Jack and I have been talking about joining paddles. Here are some instrukctions based on what I have done with these.

OK......figure you need a 1:8 to a 1:12 scarf
angle......i.e., if the shaft is 1" in diameter, and
yu go for 1:8., then, the scarf joint will run back
8"......and the total length of the shafts you started
with will be shortened 8"......or 4" each shaft.

Yes, the center of the graft is the center of the
paddle......if you set up and cut and fit carefully.

1. hold, then clamp the paddle shafts side by side
with the two faces of the blades together that you
want on the same side when you are done.

2. if you want a 90 degree offset......you are in for
lots more work.

3. With the blades perfectly in alignment......and
the clamps secure, and padded so they don't mark the
shafts........mark the scarf cut line.

4. Take a deep breath and saw them off in the
bandsaw BUT LEAVE THE CLAMPS ON.

5. On a 6 x 48 or larger, TRUED , belt sander, grind
a face on both the shafts together......any small
angular inaccuracy will take care of itself when you
line up and glue the sanded faces......these sanded
faces must be TRUE, FLAT faces.

6. Align the shafts with the sanded faces
touching......like laid out on a flat floor. Lightly
clamp them near the very center......and do your final
line-up.....with two more clamps, put more pressure on
the scarf joint, check the alignment.......loosen the
clamps one at a time, if needed, to tap the shafts one
way or another, till the scarf is RIGHT.

7. Make sure things are where you want, make sure the
clamps are firm or very firm......and nothing is
moving. Drill a 1/8" hole near the end of the scarf
at each end. Have handy a length of 1/8" wooden
dowel, cut two lengths longer than what you need and
push them through the holes.

8. Forget epoxy in the joint.....use Gorilla
Glue.......dampen one face of the scarf, apply the
Gorilla to the other face. Lay the joint together,
push the pins in, apply the clamps (with pads) and go
drink coffee.

9. Scrape with a scraper or bit of fresh-cut glass
(broken is best) , sand, glass or wrap as you wish.

10. Go Paddling

NOW.........this applies mostly to 0-degree
offset........let me think for a minute and I'll
develp a SOP for cutting scarfs at an angle......and
email it next.

Piper san is the fellow who hand makes violins, guitars, etc. He knows that of which he speaks.
I don't doubt that, but maybe I missed something in this thread.

Why "Forget epoxy in the joint....." ???

Is there some reason that epoxy is not such a good choice in this use? Or is it more of a builder's preference?

I ask, because I glued mine up with epoxy, last night. Am I in for a nasty surprise when I try to use the epoxy-glued paddle?

Chuck, use what you like. Epoxy merely takes the shape of the mating surfaces and has some bonding power. The Gorilla glue is attracted to the wood via a molecular bond and is stonger.

Epoxy, when frozen, will break like glass. And, when heated will run like any other thermoplastic compound.

Epoxy is great stuff for bonding and laminating glass fibers to wood. For pure adhesive assembly power, I will take the Polyureathanes, e.g. Gorilla, Borden Ultilmate, etc.

Piper...

When or if it ever gets that cold here in Florida then there will be a lot of folks , besides myself , in some serious problems. A new ice age.

We stand the possibility of the heat arriving 1st. What can I say , the politicians keep this state rather hot with all of there hot air.

YES ... I do use glue at times but for the final job then it is the epoxy.

Heck , everyone knows I am not that smart , Just ask Jack , I like Gritz , even bad ones cooked in clumps and cold when served with the wrong order of eggs.
Plus she got our toast to us as we were paying the bill. A real --- minus--5 star chomp and choke place. I will never be back there , ya can make bet on that.

Chuck.
PS. If anyone wants a good time .. visit the Road kill Cafe at Everglades City... NOT. Hell just forget ever going there , it is a rip off area today , Welcome ... SUCKER...It ain't nothing like it use to be , nice , friendly and pleasant , not today , no sir. The fish are not the only things taken to the cleaners down there.

Go to http://www.floridastateparks.org/collie ... efault.cfm and stay there in a camper or tent , then hit the backwaters and even out to the Gulf of Mexico. No back country fees besides the camping fee at the park or to leave your vehicle there.

This park is located between Everglades City and Marco so you can go into Marco for anything you need and bypass those vultures in Everglades city.
